Chapter #5Country Style Vacation by: Moeyuri "A ranch? You're joking right?" Megan asks.
"What? It'll be fun!"
"Better be a pot farm..." Ellen mumbles.
"Who even takes a vacation at a ranch?!"
"Lots of people! I read in the brochure that it's a great way for families to bond. Here, look" she says while handing back the brochure. Megan opens it so you and Ellen can read as well.

We offer a wide variety of activities for the whole family to enjoy!

The pamphlet continued like that throughout the entire thing. You can already see what it's about. You pay hundreds of dollars to stay in a guest house while doing their chores under the pretense of teaching kids responsibility. Besides families, it's a women only facility to teach women strength and independence.
"This is going to suck" you blurt.
"Agreed" Megan chimes.
"For sure" Ellen agrees.
"Tina, did you make a comment you want to share with me?"
"No she didn't mom!" Megan says, covering for you.
"Good. We're going to have fun out there, so just give it a chance." Everyone groans while your mom and aunt chuckle.
The next five hours go by in a flash to you, mainly because you fall asleep in Megan's lap. Soft thighs really do make for a great pillow. Once you wake up, there's nothing but corn stalks surrounding the road. For miles around there's nothing but farmland. Megan and Ellen had given up on their cell phones long ago.
Driving up to the house fills everyone with dread. There are two houses in a clearing between corn fields with a big sign saying "Jason Farms!" in faded letters. Both houses are two story farm houses. One is painted white and has a welcoming feel to it. The other is a crumbling apart, piece of crap. The unpainted wood is covered in splinters with obviously broken pieces all over. You can practically hear the weak foundation groaning.
Everyone piles out after parking the car in front of the nice house. There's a swinging bench on one side of the porch and a rocking chair on the other. A dirty barn is a good distance away from the houses. It feels like a stereotypical ranch.
"Hello? Is anyone here?" your mom calls out. She knocks on the door a few times, but no one answers.
"Hey! Over here!" a young voice calls out. Everyone looked back, and you realized this trip would be better than you thought.
Three blonde haired women were making their way over to you. The one calling out was a waving girl around eleven or twelve years old wearing overalls, a dirty shirt and barefoot. Her hair was tied back in cute pigtails. Following behind her was a tall, muscular girl around your age dressed like her sister but with boots. She was about the same height as Megan, but her arms were more hard and toned with muscle. Her long hair was tied back in a single ponytail, keeping her smiling, freckled face clear. Lastly was a short haired woman in her forties. She was the only one not wearing overalls, instead walking with dirty jeans and a flannel. A large scar ran up from her neck to her cheek, her fierce eyes piercing through you and your family. Looking her over, her arms were muscular and covered in small scars. She tipped her cowboy hat at you. They all had the same color light blonde hair and blue eyes, so they're definitely a family.
Once they were close enough the mother stepped forward with an indifferent face.
"So, you folks the Sansons and Gages?"
"Y-yes, that would be us" your mother sputters out. The woman snorted before spitting a loogie at the ground.
"We're the Carters. I'm Anne, these are my two daughters. The older one is Marie, young one is Carla." Both daughters waved after being mentioned. "Let's be clear here, this ain't gonna be a vacation. Everyone will get their own chores. Everyone is responsible for maintaining a clean living space. If the chores do not get done, feel free to pack up and leave. Y'all are responsible for your day meals, but Marie'll cook you up a nice dinner if you finish your work. The pantry and fridge is full, let me know if you need anything. We go to town once a week for groceries and things. Feel free to come along. Last thing, no refunds. Questions?"
"Why do we need to work if we're paying you?" Ellen moans.
"You paid me for a genuine farm experience, not for me to wipe your ass. Hard work builds character, and from the look of ya you need to do some work." Ellen gasps in shock while you hold back a laugh.
"Are there any sexy farm hands around?" Brenda asks.
"Only me and my daughters are here."
"Where are we sleeping?" Megan asks.
"Y'all take the white house while we stay in the wood house. We normally live in the white one, but the guest house is in no condition for guests right now."
"Why only women?" she asks again.
"We don't need men 'round here. Women can handle country life just as fine as men did. I built this farm with my own two hands after my ex-husband raped me, beat me, and tol' me I ain't shit. So the reason it's only women is a big middle finger to that fucker to show him that farming isn't a man's world. To answer the unanswered question, he's the one that gave me the shiner." She stuck her thumb to her cheek scar.
"Um...my daughter has a bit of a...physical handicap, and can't do chores. What should she do?" your mother asked. Anne walked up towards you and Megan, standing inches away from her. She only came up to her shoulders, but stared at her hard. Megan met her eyes and didn't back down.
"Looks fine to me. Probably almost as strong as Marie with those arms."
"Um, I think she meant me" you speak up. She glanced down at the sound of your voice, spotting you in your sister's palm. Then let out a girly yelp.
"What the hell is that?!"
"Do NOT speak about my daughter like that!" you mother yelled.
"What, have a problem with my sister?" Megan added, murder in her eyes. But she wasn't paying attention to them, her terrified eyes locked onto you.
"Nice to meet you, I'm Tina!" you call out. You give her a small wave, and she takes a step back.
"Is...is she...human?"
"Yes, I am and I'm perfectly capable of speaking for myself!" you correct. Anne places a hand on her chest and takes a few deep breathes before returning to her cold exterior.
"Right...my apologies, little missy. I've never seen someone so...short before."
"It's alright. I'm used to it" you beam. Normally you're offended when people treat you like that. But pretty girls get a free pass. Even tough, older cowgirls.
"Well...thanks. I don't mean to discriminate. But as for your chores...I guess you can just help out one of us."
"Will that be fine?" your mom asks.
"I don't mind, and neither will the girls. She won't be much help on her own, so she might as well learn first hand what we do."
"So, who will I be working with?" you ask.
"I'll leave that up to you. You can decide once y'all get settled. Work for you folk don't start till tomorrow anyway." Your family asks a few more questions before finally unpacking the car.
You and Megan share Carla's room, Ellen gets Marie's, and Catherine and Brenda take Anne's. Carla's room is exactly what you'd expect it to be for a girl her age. Lots of pink with dolls all around the room. Thankfully the doll beds are actually pretty soft, but they're made for dolls much larger than yourself so it feels beyond king sized. Your home for the next month is actually pretty cozy, the furniture is all well worn and looks old. Family pictures fill the walls next to the knick knacks.
After a few hours night rolls in. Marie came in without a word and started cooking dinner. You watched her from the doorway for awhile. She seems to be an experienced cook. After an hour she rings a bell and calls everyone to the dinner table. Anne and Carla help set the table as Marie places bowls of food around the long table. You sit next to Megan at the table. Everyone in your family sits at one end while the Carters sit on the other, with Anne at the head.
Dinner tastes delicious, but the atmosphere is awkward. Your mom tries to make conversation, but Anne only gives short answers. She's starting to realize that this might have been a mistake.
"So, Tina was it?" Anne asks.
"Y-yeah?"
"Tomorrow your family starts work. You can choose one of us to work with so you don't get in the way."
"Um...okay."
"Let me break it down for you. I'm in charge of managing this place. I also work the heavy machinery and do repairs. Marie is in charge of housework, chopping wood, cleaning the stables, and grooming the animals. Carla feeds the animals and helps Marie. But since she's young, we give her more free time to play. So, who do you want to go with?"
To be honest, you haven't been paying attention to what she said. The chores they do don't mean much since you'll only be watching them work. You just want to hang out with a pretty blonde. But there is one person you really want to get to know...
"Well, I guess I'll pick..." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
