Chapter #9

Stay and grapple.

    by: Unknown
With the monster’s wings already bearing down on you, there’s very little time to react. You can’t let him take to the air, but you also can’t risk another whiff of his debilitating odor, so you hold your breath, relinquish your weapon, and dive forward.

The monster fights with primal ferocity. Vicious claws tear through your clothes and gouge deep furrows in your chest and your thighs. (HP – 3)

His wings bathe you in musk-saturated air; the hot effluvium seeps through your clothing and licks at the flesh underneath. Queasy, febrile warmth clings to your skin and forces a repulsed shudder from your body. (MP - 2)

Your motions grow lethargic and your lungs begin to burn as the lack of oxygen begins to take its toll. You try to surge forwards, but you’re too slow and too weak. Black wings envelop you and slow your advance. Before you escape his wings’ embrace, the monster’s broad soles swallow up most of your forearms in their grasp. From far away his feet were a disgusting nuisance, but up close they’re frightening weapons. Inhuman heat radiates out from each of them, into your arms and your bones creak under the pressure of his grip. He yanks you forward with the might of his legs, forcing you to stumble forward.
Before you recover, he curls up to grab your head with his hands.

You struggle to fight his grip, but every time you break free of a hand, a foot wrenches your arm painfully. Each time you think you're going to break the grip of his feet, a wing restricts your movement until he resets his position. As you both struggle, your muscles quiver, and purple spots swim in your vision. Sweat runs off his soles and trickles down your arms, over your body.
Despite the life-or-death struggle, you want to scratch the skin from your body just to feel clean. (MP - 4)

You realize too late that you don't have enough time to finish him without taking a breath, so you change tactics. Instead of trying to better your position on top, you get your legs underneath you and begin to push back to a standing position. The monster has nothing to leverage against except your body, and your combined force begins to lift the beast off the ground. As you reach a standing position, his eyes are alight with fear. The monster kicks and flails, frantically beating his wings and wriggling in your grip. His claws frantically tear at your back (HP - 5).

As your vision fades to black, you singlemindedly focus on one task: Hold on. Even as your consciousness fades and you begin to fall forward, you never relinquish your hold. Some distant, petty part of your mind chuckles as you hear a sound like snapping branches accompanied by the monster’s screams of pain. (Monster HP: -5) (Your HP: -2)
