Chapter #5

Big Special

by: Adipose Rex Author IconMail Icon
“Let’s give a big Marni Blake welcome to Ken Glen, the fattest man alive, coming to us live from Abercrombie!”

Alice almost choked on the soda she was drinking. Abercrombie? The world’s fattest man lived in her own city? What were the odds of that?

On a giant screen set up to the side of Marni’s stage a man fatter than anyone Alice had ever seen – and she had experience being in the realm of fat people – came on. During the interview the feed cut between two camera angles; one a close-up of the man’s face, his chins running all the way down to the bottom of the screen and below it, and the other a diagonal angle from the front, taking in all of the man’s ginormous belly and giving a good idea of how big his sides and butt were.

Alice couldn’t tell if he was sitting on a bench or resting on a bed, his own fat filled so much of the screen even with the camera pulled back. And it wasn’t even a complete picture. Alice was certain his belly must have hit the floor and piled up on top of it, but she couldn’t see because the screen cut off at where his knees must have been. She could see the reason for two cameras; the one further back was too far back to make out his head properly. It looked like a small ball of flesh and hair atop the mountain of fat that was his body.

“Mr. Glen, thank you for joining us.”

“Call me Ken, Marni, and let me say it’s a pleasure to be here. Yours is the only show I’ll do.”

“Oh, stop,” Marni waved him off.

“I mean it. It’s so rare to find a woman with the strength of character to own who she is, not apologizing for not fitting into the supposed ideal body type.”

He wasn’t panting with exhaustion just from speaking, he didn’t look tired or struggling to breathe. Contrary to all of Alice’s ideas about how how fat was too fat, Ken looked as comfortable and at ease as anyone. Dressed in a sail-sized polo shirt and khakis, he looked no different than a suburban father enjoying a lazy Saturday; aside from the excessive fat, that is.

He was certainly leagues above the usual trailer trash Marni had on her show. Put him on radio, where people could only hear his voice and not see the elephant of a man he was, and he could probably host a talk show of his own.

“Since you put it that way, why don’t we get right to the big question (pun intended): what’s it like being the fattest man alive?”

“Well, to be frank I never thought about myself as the bigGEST until Guinness weighed me and announced it to the world. Until a month ago I was just Ken. Software programmer, loving boyfriend, a pretty good trivia player at the local pub. There was never a point in my life where I wasn’t skinny, but aside from a lot of jokes at my expense growing up – and what can you do about kids, really – I’ve always been comfortable with my size.

“Though my size has never leveled off, so perhaps I should say I’ve always been comfortable being fat and then fatter. People who know me for at least a few months get used to my size, and they might be surprised when I mention reaching another hundred pound milestone but by that point they already know I’m a big guy and a big eater, so they’re used to it.”

“Nobody gets on your case about your size? Not your doctor or your boss?”

“My boss, never. He knows what a dedicated worker I am, and since I started working from home he says my productivity has only gone up. So if constant eating and being the size of a Volkswagen means I’m finishing projects a week before deadline and under cost, it’s a wonder he hasn’t given me a bonus just to cover grocery expenses.”

He laughed at this, his entire body quaking and shaking.

“But my doctor... not so much. He stopped his finger-wagging a few years ago, but I think it’s just him giving up on getting through to me. My physicals are always good, no medical issues because of my size, so he doesn’t have any cards to play besides general fearmongering.”

“You said you’re still growing. Is there a medical cause behind your size, or...?”

“Unless overeating is a medical condition, no. This is all me. When I was young my mother always gave me treats, maybe too many, and as I got older I got in the habit of filling my belly whenever I was hungry. I just enjoy eating, and being fat doesn’t bother me so I never felt the need to diet and drop all this.”

“How does it feel, being so huge?”

“Honestly? Pretty damn good. My body is constantly rubbing against itself in a thousand different places, the physical stimuli flaring up every time I move or just shift my weight. Plus there’s something about having so much... presence. Standing out anywhere I go, the attention people give me. I’ve never felt embarrassed about this; if anything I thrive on the looks other people give me.”

He looked so confident, almost proud. Alice was reminded of her sister, Mel, an almost aggressive fatty. She was probably watching this right now; what did she think of Ken?

“Maybe this is the question everyone wants the answer to more than any: exactly how much do you weigh?”

“Now that I can’t give a solid answer to. When Guinness weighed me it was 3,258 pounds,” he paused as he was interrupted by spontaneous applause from the audience, “but to celebrate the announcement that I held a world record Babs – that’s my girlfriend, Barbara – and I took a trip to Las Vegas and, well, there are a few buffets where I can’t show my face anymore.”

Laughs from the audience and a few chuckles from Marni. This guy wasn’t a professional comedian, but he knew a little about working a crowd.

“Then how about this: any plans for the future? I don’t know if anyone is going to challenge you for your title anytime soon, but what are you doing to hold onto it?”

“I’m just being me. It’s what got me here in the first place, and as long as I keep stuffing my belly and gaining more I should be the champion for a good long while. Plus, I’m getting a lot of help from the neighborhood.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yeah, there’s quite a few people here in Abercrombie that are taking pride in my title. Mostly restaurants and eateries. They might not be thrilled with how much work I drop on their kitchen staff, but they love the publicity and media attention I’ve brought them. But there’s also some fashion designers in town that cater to the plus-sized crowd, and again, I’m bringing them great publicity. I’m not the only biggun here in Abercrombie!”

Alice’s ears perked up. Plus-sized fashion designers, here in Abercrombie?

“It sounds like you’re going to be king of the hill – or should I say mountain – for a good long while, Ken. Enjoy your reign.”

“Thanks, Marni. Love the show.”

As Marni directed the show to commercial, Alice’s thoughts were drifting away from the TV. Memories of frustration with finding fashionable outfits when she had been bigger were coming back to her. Thoughts of Mel or her friends from Buttercombe who hadn’t dropped their own fat, making due with what meager offerings in plus-sized fashion there were.

She didn’t need a better diversity of choices, but Alice hadn’t forgotten what it was like being a big girl and the needs (and frustrations) that came with it. So hearing that there were designers in her own town focused on that piqued Alice’s curiosity.

It wasn’t exactly heralded by angels with trumpets coming down from on high, but Alice felt she had found her mission in life.
