Chapter #6Go with Ashley by: NVR Even if you knew your sister was just teasing you, you felt guilty for not being there for her and not cleaning her room as she wished. You also noticed you weren't sure about what to do so it now made sense to you to ask Ashley, as that's what she suggested you should do earlier
You knocked politely in her room and after being allowed to come in, you saw Ashley was trying on some of the new stuff she bought and looking how to create new outfits with what she already had. She was trying on a green dress you thought matched perfectly with her face and haircut and made her look like one of those movie stars at the red carpet, but you wouldn't say anything like that to her. You were actually quite distant, with her thinking poorly of your mediocre performance at school and you believing she was in over her head, in no position to give good advice with all that supernatural nonsense she believed in. However, today you felt different
"What do you want?" Ashley said in a mildly annoyed tone. You haven't argued with each other in a while, but this was a weird occurrence
"Hmm, I wanted to.. apologize for not cleaning your room today and hmm, make it up to you cleaning it now if you want" You said timidly, a part of you not fully understanding why you would offer to do Ashley's chores for her, but your recent suggestions telling your gut it was the right thing to do
"What? oh right" Ashley said confused looking at the state of her room "do you really want to do that?" she said with some disbelief. Was it a prank? she knew you weren't the type to do that..
"Err yes, you said I can still do more so.. Or if you have any other suggestions on what to do please fell free to tell me" You said, still in a kinda unconvincing tone, grappling with the fact that you felt you were doing well enough without listening to your sister's annoying advice and feeling deep down she indeed knew best
Your sister looked at you in silence for a couple seconds, not being able to figure out what was going on. She did want you to listen to her more, in fact, since the death of your father she wanted to turn you into that someone capable of working hard to allow the women in the family to enjoy life without worries, but this was the first time you seemed remotely willing to listen to her
She decided to test you
"Err, if that's the case then sure, you can clean my room to make it up for today" she said also sounding unsure, still doubting your behavior. "Give me 5 minutes to change into something more comfortable and you can clean it while I watch TV in the living room"
You spent the next hour dutifully cleaning her room, making up her bed, picking up all the clothes she left on the floor and dusting carefully the surfaces of those trinkets she wanted to have in her room. You felt and odd sentation when cleaning the top of a pile of books where the spellbook you used was in, but just shrugged it off and continued. You did the best you could with simple materials making a mental note to do a more exhaustive cleaning the next time they went out, and hoping this was enough to appease your sister. Your earlier guilt replaced by a cautious excitement of knowing you were there for her, helping there with her inconveniences, helping her be happy with a clean environment and as your mother said, working so she could relax.
Ashley glared suspiciously at you when you came to her to announce her room was clean now, looking for signs of a prank or of weird behavior on your part. You followed her as she walked to her room and examined things thoroughly, surprised to see you didn't just made the bed and picked the clothes but also cleaned under her bed and dusted off the surfaces in the time you got. Checking on her drawers and her collection of items she didn't find any trace of you stealing something, moving anything out of place or setting up anything weird in her room
"Well, I'm pleasantly surprised little bro" your sister said with half a smile "I don't know what happened to you but I'm glad you found the time to clean my room, thank you and consider yourself forgiven" she chuckled recalling the earlier weird conversation
"Thank you!" you blurted out before you could stop yourself, surprising Ashley again as she wondered why you were thanking her for cleaning her room, the next sentence left her even more surprised as you once again struggled between wasting time on chores that weren't yours and wanting to know what was best for you "Hmm, let me know what else should I do"
