“Actually”, I said, suddenly interested in playing along, “I think some makeup is a great idea!”
“Fabulous! Come on,” Missy said, grabbing my hand and leading me through the crowd and down a hallway.
Once we were in a dressing room, Missy closed the door behind us. There were two more drag queens in here, both in the process of getting ready. I also spotted a pamphlet on one of the vanities. It read “Missy Mann presents: Kathleen Kandy, Libby DeLuxxxe, and Friday Knight!”
“Friday, help Kathleen with her makeup,” Missy said, staying in character. “And a wig if she wants one, but she doesn’t need it. Her natural hair is to die for!”
With that, Missy left, leaving me with “Friday” and “Libby”.
Friday sighed. “What, just because I’m performing last, the boss thinks I have time to help you?”
“I can do my own makeup,” I said, trying to be polite.
“Hon, I’ve seen you do your own makeup. We are not about to let that happen. I didn’t mean to snap, I’m just nervous about tonight. Come here.”
I walked over and sat down next to Friday, who started to apply eyeshadow to my face. After eyeshadow came some false lashes, some earrings, and finally, bright pink lipstick.
“That’s not my best work, but it’s the best I can do on such short notice. It’s almost time. You want a wig, Kath?”
“Uh, no thanks,” I answered. Friday was right. It was almost time for me... no, for Kathleen Kandy to perform. I didn’t know how to perform as a drag queen. What would I do?
