This choice: Mowgli decides to stay in the jungle (jungle book) • Go Back...Chapter #4Mowgli decides to stay in the jungle (jungle book) by: Unknown Mowgli the man-cub had defeated Shere Khan, the man-hating tiger by tying a burning branch to his tail. The tiger fled as the rain poured down, but it appeared as if Mowgli's best friend Baloo the bear had been killed during the scuffle. Bagheera, the wise old panther gave a eulogy about the courage Baloo had shown.
"Greater love hath no one than he who lays down his life for his friend. When great deeds are remembered in this jungle, one name will stand above all others: our friend, Baloo the bear. The memory of Baloo's sacrifice and bravery will forever be engraved on our saddened hearts. This spot where Baloo fell will always be a hallowed place in the jungle, for there lies one of nature’s noblest creatures." said Bagheera.
"I wish my mother could have heard this." Baloo said to himself. It turned out he had been alive the whole time, as he was relishing the eulogy.
"It's best we leave now. Come along, Man-Cub." Bagheera told Mowgli.
"Hey, don't stop now, Baggy! you're doing great! There's more! Lots more!" Baloo exclaimed.
"Why, you big... fraud! You-you-you... four-flusher! I'm-I'm-I'm fed up!" Bagheera exclaimed. Mowlgi ran happily to Baloo, who gave him a bear hug.
"Baloo, you're all right!" Mowgli exclaimed.
"You'd better believe it!" Baloo told Mowgli. Wise old Bagheera shook his head. In his eyes, everything was all wrong; Shere Khan was the lord of the jungle, and all the animals fled when he approached, yet Mowgli, the puny man-cub had managed to drive the tiger away. When word of this spread through the jungle, even Kaa the python would have the reason to fear the man-cub. There was no doubt about it; Mowgli had earned his right to stay in the jungle, as he was now a man. He said it himself when he faced Khan. He belonged in the Man-Village with his own kind, but Bagheera could argue with him no more, as there was nothing he could gain from any argument he tried. Perhaps there was another way.
"It's rather a shame to come so far and not see it." Bagheera said suddenly. Mowgli stopped hugging Baloo, and looked over at Bagheera.
"See what?" he asked.
"Why, the Man-Village. It really is an interesting place." answered Bagheera.
"But I'm not going to the Man-Village." Mowgli told Bagheera.
"Naturally you're not, you've earned your right to stay in the jungle, but I thought we could just look at it. It's not far from here." Bagheera told Mowgli. Both he and Baloo looked very doubtful.
"We couldn't possibly go into the Village, of course, that would be madness. We'll just peek at it from the edge of the jungle." Bagheera told Mowgli and Baloo.
Did Mowgli and Baloo decide to just take a look at the Man-Village at Bagheera's request? indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
