Chapter #5
You confront Denise directly
by: Unknown
You take a deep breath and weigh your options. Failing to lock your work station is a fireable offense and if you go to Kim with this she might see it that way too. But if Denise shows anyone that email you'll get fired and lose the best reference on your resume. No one in the industry would hire you if they thought you were stupid enough to send an email like that! You decide to tackle to issue head on and appeal to Denise's sensibilities. You turn around and she is wearing an absolute Cheshire Cat smile.
"Interesting email you sent Bobby."
"Denise, I don't know what you have planned but you don't need to do this."
"I don't know what you're talking about Bobby. As a matter of fact I'm having a hard time hearing you. Why don't you come closer."
You shuffle your feet around the side of her desk so you're standing right next to her. She swims your old computer desk so she is fully facing you.
"No that won't do. You're too tall for me to hear up there. Best if you kneel down like you were over at your desk." She smiles wickedly.
You hesitate.
"Or I could just print this email and see who pulls it off the communal printer first?"
Checkmate. You sink to one knee in front of her, leaving your other leg out so it almost appears that you are stretching.
"Both knees Bobby."
Her voice is cold and you know you need to keep her happy so you oblige. A few odd looks are cast in your direction as your office mates notice you kneeling in front of your biggest rival but you try not to pay attention to them.
"What do you want Denise?" You figure being direct is your best approach.
"What I want is your obedience. We both know what I could do to you with this email. You'd be fired and ruined in the industry, I'd make sure it got as public as possible. But now that I've got this at my disposal, I'll settle for having you as a loyal servant. Someone to watch my back and be at my beck and call as I move up the ladder. The only promotions you'll be getting from now on are ones that I give you."
You kneel there in stunned silence. She was so evil! So conniving! But she was also so...RIGHT! With just a few clicks of a mouse she had placed you fully at her mercy. The promotion you were certain you'd get over her was a dream now. You were shaken out of your stupor by a jab from her heel to your knee. You glared up at her.
"But for now, I'll settle for a soy bean latte with a double shot of espresso. I'm going to start timing you, if you aren't back in ten minutes I bring this email to Kim and you're out of work."
You kneel there with your jaw open, the Starbucks was down five flights of stairs and across the lobby. You'd have to sprint the whole way and hope there wasn't a line.
"Clocks ticking." She said with a smile.
You jump to your feet and begin sprinting across the office floor, narrowly missing several collisions with your coworkers. You barge down the stairs and across the lobby figuring you're making good time. You get to the Starbucks and notice there is one person in line in front of you.
