Chapter #6

Entering the Forest

    by: Unknown
You had sought the permission of Ecclestar, and gotten his blessing to take a trip away from the Temple very easily - he was probably wondering why you hadn’t asked sooner. Autumn talked about it pretty much all the time over the years, so everyone in the Temple was aware that this trip was imminent. In fact, as news spread, some friendly strangers lent the two of you food and equipment to help you survive your little expedition. By the time you decided to leave, Autumn had been given a Choice Scarf by one of her friends, you had been gifted a pretty necklace with a Life Orb attached, and overall enough berries and gear to last a week in the wild. Mostly, they did it for Autumn - you weren’t overwhelmingly popular in the Temple, given your antisocial tendencies, but the cute, cheery little vulpix was pretty much universally beloved. Her excitement for the trip was infectious, and once you left, most of the Temple had assembled to say their goodbyes and wish the two of you good luck.

After that little ceremony, you traveled down the mountainside, Autumn’s excitement only growing as you grow closer to the greenery below. During the long trek, you notice that the Linoone’s struggles had subsided. It was still conscious- you could feel it move faintly- but it had completely given up hope, or just become too exhausted to keep fighting. Now that it had stopped struggling, you stomach walls were allowed to squeeze in around him, restraining him completely and shifting digestion into full gear. Typically, he would remain conscious in this state, suffering silently, for most of the day, with his body finishing digesting the day after. So you won’t have to find more prey to eat until the day after tomorrow, at least.

You emerge onto the plains of the valley, probably the safest part of the wilderness. Autumn was eager to explore, but you stopped her. “Hold on,” you say. “Clawing at a practice target is much different from actual fighting. So why don’t we try some real training?” She perked up with interest at that offer. “In the wild, Pokémon won’t try to fight fair, they’ll try to ambush you. And once they grab you, it’s over. So why don’t we play a game?” You elaborate. “You close your eyes, and I’ll hide in the grass. Then, you’ll try to find me while I try to sneak up and pounce on you. And I won’t go easy on you! Sound good?” She nodded eagerly. A new way of training she’s never tried before? She could hardly contain herself. “Alright, close your eyes then. 10 seconds.” She lays on her belly and covers her eyes adorably with her forepaws. As she counts slowly and loudly, you immediately duck down into the tall grass, blending in with the plains, just like you do when hunting real prey.

“Ready or not, here I come!” She said, jumping up, and looking around quickly. She squinted her eyes, spinning around as she analyzed the tall grass around, focusing on trying to see any trace of you. She didn’t yet realize that a skilled predator in the tall grass was virtually impossible to spot.

You could’ve pounced easily by now, but you give her a few extra seconds to see if she readjusts her tactics. But no; she continues looking around in a circle, so when her back was turned to you, you suddenly leaped! She heard you emerge from the grass and turned to face you, but far too late. You landed right on top of her before she could react, pinning her to the ground without hurting her, and, instead of eating her like you normally do to prey, simply playfully blew raspberries on her stomach, sending her into a fit of giggles. “Got ya! I win!” You tease.

“Hahaha! Stop, stop!” She giggled, pushing you away. “No, no, I want a rematch! I think I got it figured out!” You nod with a smile, and she goes back to counting. You disappear into the grass once again. Apparently, Autumn learned quickly - this time, instead of spinning around trying to spot you, she focused her acute senses of smell and hearing to get an idea of where you were. When you leaped out at her, she anticipated it, stepping out of the way and leaving you falling face-first into the dirt. As you sat up, spitting out dirt and grass, Autumn laughed victoriously. “I win! I win! I win!”

“Wow… I’m impressed, Autumn," you compliment, earnestly. “Maybe I really shouldn’t have been so worried.” She certainly took after her mother. With that agility and quick thinking ability, she may be even more promising than you were at her age. “You’re definitely ready to head into the forest for real… but remember; if anything jumps out at us, you just try using your Confuse Ray and I’ll handle it.”

“Yes, mom!” She said, only half listening as she skipped into the dense treeline. You followed her through the bushes, and emerged in the dense regions of the forest. With the thick weeds, high trees and thick canopy, the forest almost felt like another world all on its own. The ground below the massive trees was mostly dark, the only available sunlight being what could pour in through the tree canopy. The familiar cacophony of sounds and smells reached you, and you felt a pang of nostalgia. After all these years, you were home. Of course, you still had to be careful. It had been more than a decade, so everything would probably be completely different than it was in your glory days. Hell, a new ruler might have even taken control of the forest in your absence. Imagine that!

Autumn leaned against your furry side as the two of you looked out into the wilderness, completely awestruck. It was almost time to pass the torch, or so you thought to yourself. You had no doubt that one day, Autumn would be the queen of this forest, as you had once been. But the path would be long, hard, and most of all, violent...

What to do first?

You have the following choices:

*Pen*
1. Teach her how to hunt.

2. Teach her how to build a nest.

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
