There's a certain innocence that comes with being a toddler. Truthfully, Melanie had no idea her big brother Kevin was upset with her over something she hadn't even realized she'd done. Every day for her was a new adventure, a new opportunity to learn and grow. She just had no idea how literal that was going to be (nor did she know what 'literal' meant).
When she woke up after that good night's sleep, she had so much energy! She wanted to go outside and play as soon as she got the chance! Fortunately, she didn't have long to wait, as her mother came in and got her out of her pajamas and dressed into her clothes for the day before she headed out to run some errands. And almost immediately, Melanie toddled off to the backyard, giggling the whole way as she finally plopped into the sandbox. "Make castle!"
Of course, little Melanie's idea of a sandcastle was just a large mound of sand with a little toy flag sticking out the top of it. So she got to work piling up the sand as best as she could, stopping for a brief moment when she saw Krypto come out of his doghouse with a yawn. "Kippo!" She wobbled her way out of the sandbox and hurried over to hug the white canine with a laugh. "Love you Kippo!"
"Heh, love you too kiddo." Krypto had to resist the urge to wag his tail. After all, a couple wags would be all it took to put the whole neighborhood on earthquake watch. But darn if Melanie wasn't just the most adorable little girl Krypto had ever seen. So innocent, so purehearted; anything she did wrong was never out of bad intentions or malice. It was just an unfortunate result of her young age and lack of knowledge. Sure, she'd learn over time. But as a 2-year old, Melanie's sense of right and wrong wasn't even close to fully developed.
Not that that meant anything to Kevin, who judging by the grimace on his face when he came outside, was still peeved over Melanie ruining his school project. "And there she is, completely oblivious to the fact she set me back two whole days."
Frowning at the comment, Krypto grabbed Melanie by the back of her pants with his teeth and dropped her back in the sandbox, giving her a few licks on her head which earned squealing laughter before the sand captured her attention once more. As soon as she was fully occupied, Krypto went over to Kevin, whose arms were crossed in frustration. "It's not like she meant to break it Kevin. She was just curious. Human toddlers are like that."
"I know! And that's what bothers me!" Kevin griped. "If she meant to break it, at least then I'd be justified in being mad at her, but instead she's totally clueless and I look like the jerk for being angry over a ruined school project. And I have to watch her while Mom's gone!"
"You're not a jerk Kevin. You have the right to be upset about what happened, you just can't blame her for it is all." Krypto looked back at Melanie, who was still blissfully unaware of the discussion taking place. "Tell ya what, why don't I keep her busy while you get a headstart on redoing that project? If I run into anything that requires opposable thumbs, I'll give you a bark."
"Thanks Krypto." Kevin's gratitude didn't seem sincere judging by the tone of voice he used. As he turned to head back inside, he looked over his shoulder for a moment to give one last glare at Melanie. "I said it last night and I'll say it again. I wish so much that Melanie was bigger, then she could clean up her own mess instead of me having to do it for her."
"Be careful what you wish for Kevin." Krypto snarked with a raised eyebrow and smirk. "We've already seen what Melanie can do as a giant."
"Oh ha ha, you know what I meant."
Unfortunately, the powers that be didn't particularly care what Kevin meant. Fate and luck wouldn’t
be kind this day.
Unbeknownst to Kevin and Krypto.
