Biting your lip with bead of dew swelling, streaming along your forehead, you can wait no longer. "Just," you raise a shaking finger before her face, "just one second!" Your breath restrained inside your chest, you rush to the device. Heart beating, battering your other organs, you return to Kourtney with the gun-like transposer in both hands. She jumps back with a shriek; a clouded, stupor of expression parts with an innocent, nervous laugh, "Oh, no, no! It's not a gun, Kourtney!" She blinks, no other part of her body moving on any axis, then approaches cautiously. In rough whisper, "Come closer! I don't want anybody else to see yet."
Leaning back from the waist, Kourtney keeps careful watch on the device, "What is it?" Taking her final step, she moves her eyes closer to the device, suspending above it with head almost driven through your chest. You step back to observe it again yourself.
"It's called a matter transposer," you announce proudly, your description concluding with an awed pause that carries on much longer than a simple pause should.
Kourtney's eyes roll up to yours inquiring; she asks, "And what's that do?"
You feel your mouth hang open for a moment before you form the response, "It can make things grow or shrink, like in science-fiction stories." Kourtney is in hushed silence for once, the breath rushing from her nostrils the loudest sound coming from her. Together looking down at the peculiar instrument of alteration in your hand, you can hardly believe it works; she can hardly believe it works. You quietly pronounce, "And it really works."
Kourtney looks back up to you sharply, her voice becoming animated once more, "Oh, come on! It does not!" She slaps you on the arm, then rejostles her books against her waist. "I don't believe it. It's impossible!" Looking into her eyes, the disbelief is obvious, mind not aligned like yours to the proven reality of this accepted impossibility. Unnable to utter a further explanation, you fail to convince Kourtney. She passes a sour smile, "You have fun," then turning away, she waves, "maybe you can show me how your toy works some other time!" Her broad hips swing as she strides away.
