A week and a half ago, if you told Chris that he'd be skulking around a haunted house, dressed in thick clothes and waiting for people to jump out and terrify, he wouldn't have believed you. Not that the idea didn't sound fun, as a joke, but he doubted he'd get many opportunities, even if it was October. No, Chris wasn't used to participating in stuff like that, or in most things in general, aside from hanging out with some friends every now and again.
But then one of his friends, Harriet, told him about this Haunted House/Halloween Fair thing the town was running. Now, Chris didn't go to a lot of fairs, but Halloween was a fun time of the year, so it caught Chris's attention. Harriet was working there as a makeup artist; both at a face-painting booth for the kids, and also helping the volunteers in the haunted house get all ghouled-up to do their jobs. She told him that they needed another volunteer or two, and Chris, being a decently tall, decently fit guy with a lot of free time, fit the bill perfectly!
And so, a couple times a week, with a few more as it got closer to Halloween, Chris showed up at the Town Manor. It was a big building, made to be a home a long time ago, but some things happened, a bunch of legal stuff that no one really bothered looking into, and it sort of just ended up being owned by the town. So, with the decent amount of land surrounding the house itself, the township used it a couple times a year for big public events. When October came around, they spookified the place, and held a big fair around it.
All in all, it wasn't a bad deal. The clothes were a little itchy, not to mention tight in a few... uncomfortable places, and he was spending a lot of time in dusty cramped spaces helping to set up the decorations and mechanical scares, but it was all in good fun, and he was excited for the night itself. All it really came down to was the costume and the place he'd be hiding. He was excited to be...
