Charlotte decided to test the device using both the "Awareness" and "Non-Awareness" options. Taking the less risky option first, she set it to "Non-Awareness" and looked around for people to swap. Since this was just a test, she wasn't particular about the combination of people to be swapped, as long as she could see the results, to see if the device worked at all.
As it happened, Nicola was standing nearby. The 43-year-old mother was pregnant yet again, not that far along, but somewhat visible. Charlotte wondered whether a pregnancy would transfer as well. Only one way to find out.
Nicola happened to be talking to Rob while they were both stocking some shelves. Charlotte aimed her new device at them both, pressed a button, and prepared to be disappointed... but she wasn't! Nicola's subtle baby bump melted away, and the flat crotch area of her trousers bulged out as would be expected for a man. Rob had the opposite problem: his crotch was clearly female, and he was clearly pregnant. Charlotte barely suppressed an excited squeal. This device would be fun!
As she walked past the two, she overheard them talking. Rob seemed to have misgivings about his pregnancy, and Nicola was trying to encourage him.
"It's nothing to be afraid of," she was saying. "You'll find it's very rewarding. Or... um... so I'm told," she added, looking confused. "I couldn't know first-hand, of course. Then why...?" Nicola shook herself and seemed to forget what she'd been saying. Then she continued: "My husband and I never regretted adopting our kids. I only wish I could have carried them naturally. I envy you, in a way."
"I suppose it must seem that way to you," answered Rob, "but though it varies, I find childbirth rather painful. During my first... um... I mean... it runs in the family," he corrected himself clumsily.
Charlotte missed the rest of the conversation, since she didn't want to be caught eavesdropping and was walking purposefully away so as to seem busy. But the part of the conversation she had heard gave her some information about how the device adjusted reality to prevent anyone from noticing the changes.
"Now, I wonder whether Awareness makes everyone aware, or only the vic- the beneficiaries?" she wondered, changing the setting on the swapping device. Not wanting to cause too much panic in the store, she glanced through the window to scan for test subjects.
Her eyes fell on a family walking past. Two parents were walking by, with their children walking ahead of them. The older brother was "subtly" checking out girls whenever he got the chance, and the younger sister was window-shopping, mostly paying attention to dresses and dolls. Charlotte took aim at the siblings and fired...

William Simmons, 18, was having a good day. He'd just gotten a new girlfriend at school, called Stacy, whom he'd been sweet on for a while. Still, being a teenage boy, this didn't stop him from checking out the goods whenever a good-looking girl around his age came walking by.
His little sister, 13-year-old Vicky, was running on ahead and window-shopping for dolls. Although some of her classmates were showing interest in boys, she wasn't yet at that stage, which suited William fine. He didn't want to think of his sister fancying boys in THAT way, and idly wondered what he'd do once that time came. He might have to bash a few eager fellows about, he thought, amused.
Then, suddenly, everything changed. Charlotte's device was activated.
As he walked, William felt his penis going flaccid, which was odd, because he wasn't aware of having been aroused. However, it kept on shrinking, and he stopped, confused. He wasn't about to feel himself up in public, so he bent down pretending to tie his shoelace as his parents walked past him. Then, checking briefly to ensure that nobody was watching him, he ran a finger across the crotch area of his pants.
And found nothing!
Well no, not nothing, he corrected himself, his eyes getting wider and his breath getting shallower. He definitely felt an alien sensation down there. Another rub across his front confirmed it. His fingers were feeling the lips of a vagina, and his vaginal lips felt his hand rubbing across them.
