A Pair of Safe Hands

''What's up, Doc?'' Luke greets the wizened old man who seems to be busy tinkering.

''Young Luke,'' the old man swings his head to give the Wilko employee a passing glance, ''Rather late this morning? Close the door, swiftly.'' the old man barks an order, ''I already feel my inspirations flying away.'' He reaches out his hands to the air and as if plucking something out of thin air, makes some wild grabbing movements.

Quickly Luke does as he is told. After two months of working for the old man, Luke has grown to not only understand his employer's eccentricity and perhaps a dash of pure madness, but also how brilliant the crazed old man is.

''I've done it,'' the old man's resounding cackles fills the basement where he is working, ''I've done it!'', he exclaims in an excited shrill, ''Come boy, let us celebrate.''

Luke cranes his neck to look at the object on the old man's desk. It reminds him of a toy gun that shoots out foam dart bullets with it's bright colours and sharp contrast. The body of the gun is mainly blue with a line of green neon lights running along both sides. The grip has a similar colour motif with a red patch indicating where the fingers should rest when holding the gun.

''That's great Doc,'' Luke says in puzzlement, ''But what is it exactly?''
