Lindsay woke up with a start, her sight immediately being met by what looked like an endless, black void. She stood up from the ground—or lack thereof— and noticed a distant figure. Somehow, she felt drawn to it, and slowly paced her way to it.
The closer she got to it, the more she was able to notice the figure making its own way to her. She finally got close enough to make out the figure’s features— it was another woman. This woman possessed beautiful blue eyes; long, ginger hair; fair skin and a fit body.
Lindsay was about to speak, but the woman promptly interrupted her. “Who the hell are you?” Lindsay was taken aback. She had just met this woman, yet she felt like she was being threatened by her. “L-Lindsay. I could say the same to you.”
The woman shook her head before responding, “no, it’s not who you are. It’s what you are.” “What? What does that mean?” Lindsay questioned, feeling confused. “You’ve... you’ve got no face!” The woman exclaimed. Lindsay scrunched her face in confusion before she did a quick check of the features on her face. Two eyes, two eyebrows, two cheeks, one nose, one mouth, one chin.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, I can feel my face— it’s there!” Lindsay shot back. “Well if you do, I certainly can’t see it!” The woman countered. Lindsay sighed in frustration, but quickly put that past her as she was more concerned about where they were.
She checked her surroundings again, still seeing nothing but blackness. “Do you know where we are?” Lindsay asked. “I’m just as confused as you are.” The woman responded honestly. “All I remember is driving in my car and blacking out as I was passing through an intersection.” Lindsay almost jumped in response, as this woman’s experience sounded very similar to her own. “Wait, I pretty much remember the same thing happening to me, except I was walking on the crosswalk by an intersection. That’s really weird how similar our... our...” Lindsay felt suddenly drowsy, and fell to the ground in weakness. Before she passed out, she saw that the woman had also fallen over and was already blacked out.
Lindsay woke up again, but this time in a hospital room. She noticed an IV attached to her right arm, and a heartbeat monitor close by her bed. She turned her head to the left and was immediately met by the head of another woman close to her own. “What the...” was all she could muster before the woman next to her jolted awake and sat up, pulling Lindsay with her. “Where am I? What’s going on?!” Avery gasped, quickly checking her surroundings before bumping her head into Lindsay’s.
“Who the hell are you? Why are you so close to me? You’re making me feel uncomfortable.” Avery questioned Lindsay as she awkwardly tried to create more space between her and Lindsay. Lindsay immediately felt the left side of her neck straining, and as she was looking down at it, she finally realized the situation they were in. She immediately screamed in horror and yanked her and Avery to the right, launching them off the bed and onto the floor.
They both yelped in pain as they hit the floor, and now that the blanket was off of them, Avery was finally able to see what terrified Lindsay so much. There was only one gown-covered body between them. She mimicked Lindsay’s prior scream of terror as she desperately tried to pull away from Lindsay. They placed their hands on each other’s heads and pushed as their body flailed around. The shock must’ve been too much for them, as they eventually passed out on the floor.
Doctors rushed in after all of the commotion they heard, and say Lindsey and Avery’s body laying on the floor. They lifted their body back up onto the bed and covered it with a blanket. “We should place restraints on their arms, legs, and torso so this doesn’t happen again,” one of the doctors suggested. “That would probably be for the best. Can’t have another incident like this,” another doctor concurred.
Not until a few hours later did Lindsay and Avery wake up again. Still remembering the condition they were in, they tried pulling away from each other again; this time, however, the restraints stopped them from being able to move much. All they could do was lay their heads back down onto the pillow in frustration. A doctor walked in the room and stopped at the foot of their bed. “Look, I understand how shocked and confused you two must be, but I need you both to calm down so that I can explain what’s going on.” He said flatly.
“Whatever your explanation is, it’d better be a good one because otherwise I’m gonna raise hell in this hospital!” Avery exclaimed in frustration towards the doctor. “I second that sentiment.” Lindsay concurred with Avery.
“Alright, alright,” the doctor sighed, “here’s what happened to you two.” The doctor went on to explain each of the accidents the women were involved in, the injuries their original bodies had sustained, the artificial body they now had, and why they were forced to share it.
Avery sunk her head down in disbelief. “So, we’re going to be like this for the rest of our lives, aren’t we?” She said meekly before she placed her face in her left hand and began to sob. Lindsay couldn’t believe what the doctor had said either, and felt tears begin to fall down her cheeks. At the same time, however, she understood that the woman that she now shared a body with was just as scared as her.
Lindsay looked at Avery and placed her arm across their body and around their stomach, resting her hand on Avery’s side of their hips. Avery removed her tear filled face from her hand and looked at Lindsay, their faces merely inches apart. “Look, Avery is it? I understand exactly how you’re feeling. I’m just as afraid as you are. But we’re probably going to be stuck together like this for the rest of our lives. All we can do is make the best of a messed up situation, and I’m willing to work together with you to make this work. I certainly don’t want us to be at odds with one another; otherwise, we’re always gonna be miserable. Whaddya say?” Lindsay poured her heart out to Avery.
Avery looked down at their body for a moment in thought before making eye contact with Lindsey. After a few seconds, she grinned slightly. “Deal.” She placed her own arm across their stomach and rested her hand on Lindsay’s side of their hips, completing a sort of embrace between them. They rested their heads together and closed their eyes, which calmed them down.
With that, they were both ready to begin their journey together as two women sharing the same body.
