With Sally-Anne's enormous boots smashing their way straight towards you, you really don't have a lot of time to act or even think. One glance over at the gigantic milkmaid's trampling footwear is enough to scare you out of allowing either woman to catch sight of you. An insect sized creature in a barn? The ladies would be all too inclined to assume you're some creepy vermin and kill before you can get away from them. After all, pests and vermin tend to pop up around farms and subjugating them is a constant battle.
Even if the ladies figure out that you're not a bug, they'll probably just mistake you for a plaything . Your life expectancy wouldn't be much better. No, you're not going to emerge from the haystack until these women abandon their investigation. You're not going to let your life end under a trampling sole or in the clutches of curious hands.
You burrow your way down into the hay bale, as deep as you can, until you can go no further. Down here, no light reach you. The moos and grunts of the cows , once intimidatingly loud, are now reduced to haunting murmurs. Even the sound of Sally-Anne's footfalls t make only a fraction of the thunderous KTHOOMs they did before. Soon, those come to a halt. "Hawlright. I don't see anything just yet, but that don't mean there ain't anything down there." She says, her voice still audible. You tremble in fear as the giantess begins to lower her arms down and pick her way through the hay. The sounds of her hands rustling the mountain of hay overhead reverberate around you.
For minute after minute, Sally-Anne delves through the hay. If you hadn't dove down as deep as you did, she would have surely spotted you by now. Just when you think that her investigation will end, you hear more footsteps. "Come on. I'll help you look." You stifle a yelp as Sally is the senior of the two milkmaids joins in the hunt for whatever it was that made the noise. Infestations , be the parasitic bugs or overconfident shrunken adventurers, are no laughing matter for farms! The older milkmaid's searching motions are far more aggressive than Sally's. The rustling of the straw becomes a terrifying scraping rumbling roar as she pushes into the hay and sloshes it this way at that.
Despite their best efforts, however, they are unable to locate you. You silently smirk as the women abandon search. It seems the idiom about 'finding a needle in a haystack' was well-founded. These two, who you assume to be skilled professionals, certainly weren't up to the task! After briefly savoring your victory, though, you come to a shocking realization. You can barely move! You had dug as deep as you could through the hay earlier, but now you find that trying to climb back out is just as hard! In sifting through the hay, the women unknowingly shifted the straws about in such a way that they blocked your escape route!
You curse under your breath and begin trying to force your way back up to safety. Before you can make much headway, the older woman's voice booms from overhead. "Sal, it looks like some of the cows are running low on hay. Could you be a doll and get some for them?"
And thus it dawns on you that there was a very obvious drawback to deliberately embedding yourself as deep as you possibly could into a pile of hay in a dairy farm. You evaded the clutches of the inquisitive giantesses, but now you're going to be at the mercy of an entirely different breed of giant 'ladies.' You begin desperately trying to push and slide and cut your way upwards as Sally-Anne stomps away, no doubt to get something to spear and scoop the hay up. Her stomps grow more distant....still barely a sign of progress. Her stomps grow louder. Oh no! Hurry! You have to hurry! She's almost there...she's back! "Hold on ladies. Imma get you your feed" Sally-Anne says, speaking to the horde of gigantic bovines.
A loud burst of noise assaults your ears as the woman shoves a huge hay fork into the haystack, its prongs piercing through the wall of hay you had so much trouble escaping. You feel yourself getting lifted up. Oh no! You've been swept up with the hay! You turn your attention straight down, or at least towards where you think down is, as the world shifts into motion. No source of light. You had hoped the scoop would impact just below you and give you a chance to tumble out below, but you have no such luck. THUD. THUD. THUD. It'll only be a matter of time now....
"Awwwwlright . There we go!
You feel a lurch in your stomach as the hay is dropped down and lands on the surface of an enormous feeding trough with a thud. "Eat up, okay? The woman un-shanks the hay clump and uses the back of the fork to kind of neaten it up a bit, then stomps off to get more hay. As she moves off, you hear the frightful sounds of several gigantic cows heading your way. Catching your first glimpse of light since you dug your way into this mess, you fight your way towards it and emerge to find that you are indeed in an enormous feeding trough, and not one that you could easily exit! You turn your attention first towards the towering walls of the trough, then towards a far more menacing sight. Looking up, you see the form of an enormous bovine's head descending towards the trough, two other cows joining it, one to either side, all of them ready to tear into the hay. It is a formidable sight, and although you know for a fact that cows are herbivores, they might just be willing to give the tiny novelty in their trough a taste!
