Chapter #6

Need before Greed

    by: Froakie Author IconMail Icon
You had learned a lot from your last trip over at the pile. If you could just grab the things you need and not pile yourself down as much, you probably could get back to your base camp before your mother noticed you again. All the supplies you were gathering would have taken you so much longer without your giant mother helping you. It was very useful afterall.

Taking a deep breath, you already know what you are going to do. Argh. . you feel like taking such big risks this early isn't the smartest move. Yet. . you know how good it will feel being rewarded with such a well-established base camp. Plus, with your mom cleaning so thoroughly, you'll need to be loaded up with food before your family comes out and has a picnic or something. It would be a lot harder foraging for food later.

Rushing over again, with an empty backpack and your bare hands, you stare up at the monolithic mother that hovers over in the distance. She is still pretty scary due to her size, but she seems less intimidating now for some reason. Maybe you are getting used to seeing her, and since she is familiar with you, you feel a bit safer around her.

Still, you had to be cautious and not let that mindset go to your head. Even unintentionally, your family posed a great threat to you and your base camp.

You couldn't let them become aware of your location at all.

Finally reaching the pile, you looked through it now that it had grown larger in size. There was some really good stuff here, but for now. . this would probably be your last trip to the pile. Gathering necessities needed to take priority over grabbing things just for other practical use. The first thing that you placed in your bag was a couple of small circular screw holders. These could be used as rudimentary wheels and you could make a wheelbarrow, a cart, or whatever you needed to help you out.

'YEAH YEAH YEAH!! YEAH!! OH YEAH!!!' boomed high above, but not in your mother's voice.

It was the song Candy by Mandy Moore. That was her ring tone.

You shook your head as your mother could be so childish having a teen pop song as her ring tone. She must have wanted to feel younger than she actually was.

'HELLO?' your mother boomed, now pacing back and forth. You needed to be careful here, as if she noticed you now being distracted by the phone. . you'd be finished!!

'OH HI HONEY!! YES, EVERYTHING IS GOING WELL!! THE PATIO IS LOOKING MUCH NICER NOW!! EVERYTHING WILL BE READY FOR OUR DINNER OUTSIDE, TONIGHT!!'

Your ears perked up. That was why she was cleaning so thorough. . they would be eating outdoors tonight. The question for you though . . was how? A table dinner on the patio, BBQ, Smore's? There was so many different options, but she didn't seem to be saying anything else. Regardless, you might have to 'crash' this party to try and gather some additional supplies. For now though, you tried to refocus your efforts on the pile again.

Next, you saw a bunch of beef jerky scraps that someone probably was eating out here, but the tiny specks of it were now scattered everywhere. These would be a good food source due to their longevity and their ease of storage. Finally, you grabbed some more twine. Rope would be crucial for tying and otherwise, so getting more of that would be very helpful. As you started to make your way back. . your eyes grew large when you saw a small triple A battery!! It was so big compared to you but. . if you could figure a way to bring this back to base camp. . you might be able to use its power to do some rudimentary things.

'NO DEAR, WE DON'T WANT TOO MUCH OF THAT!! WE NEED TO WATCH YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE!!' Your mother said in a somewhat naggy voice.

Your dad probably wanted to eat something unhealthy but was shot down. Poor Dad.

Looking back at the battery, you started to think of some other ways you could put this to use. A small heater, stove equipment, whatever you could think of you might be able to do . . if you could get this big thing back. The question is. . how would you do it? It sure would be risky getting this big thing back to, considering how vigilant your mother has been towards insects. Still, it might be worth it. Also, now that your mother was on the phone, you might be able to get it away before she even notices.
