Ren was at the wrong place at the wrong time, interfering with the wrong person in defense of a stranger. He was charged with a crime he didn't commit, had his reputation in his hometown crushed into the dirt to then be sent away from his home in total disgrace to the only school that would accept a registered criminal like him in Tokyo.
Moving to the big city in a small cafe under the care of a man that didn't trust him, who Ren neither knew, trust or felt comfortable around with a new and infamous reputation that preceded him was going to be hard, to say the least. He was hated, and judged, and he was trapped in what society thought of him as.
And then, he went to Shujin Academy for his first day on Monday. It was much the same, the principal making it clear he only took him in to bolster the academy's reputation by "reforming a criminal" and his teachers clearly mistrusting and looking down on him the moment he set foot in. Resigned to his new and miserable existence for an entire year there, Ren went through the motions of the first day listlessly going to each class and having to hear the brunt of the rumors already going around about his supposed crimes.
The second day was different, to say the least. Crossing paths with a fellow loud-mouthed blond student -Ryuji Sakamoto- and hearing about his animosity towards the PE teacher, Mr. Kamoshida, the two decided to go together to Shujin only for the two of them to stumble upon a fantastical castle where the school should be. Inside, strange creatures in the shape of knights captured them and brought the two before a yellow-eyed doppelganger of Kamoshida who then beat and mocked them before ordering the knights to kill them both.
It was then, right then, when it truly began - with a voice. Soft and sure and mocking him, taunting him into standing up and fighting his destiny. It was then, when Ren gained the strength to save himself and Ryuji from death - by shedding his skin, and becoming something else.
