Jail Break...

by: J. M. Darkly Author IconMail Icon
On the front page the head line was titled, "Mon Cons Escape!"
"What's this?" You ask Maggie.
Your lioness wife unfolded the paper and began reading the front page aloud while Meryl sat down.
"Last night, around 3am, the monster prison Under Gloom, experienced its first break out in the facility's history. More than 60 inmates broke out of their cells and over powered the guards on duty before heading out of the underground building and onto the surface. Fortunately, the local police forces reacted quickly upon word from the prison's warden and as of now nearly all inmates have been recaptured and returned to their cells.
"However, 2 people are still unaccounted for after the breakout. Security Guard Lisa Darkholme and an as of yet unidentified male prisoner... See page 5 for more."
Maggie opened to page 5 and looked over it quickly. Once done she closed the paper and placed it on the table with a sigh.
"Not much after that, just something about a possible inside job. They're starting an internal investigation into it. Nothing about who the escaped prisoner is or any real info about him at all. It's really annoying."
Meryl piped in. "Maybe he's so dangerous they don't want anyone actively looking for him."
Maggie just shrugged. "All I know is that now I'm going to spend all day answering 911 calls now. I'll have to hunt down every strange guy from here to Europe before long."
Maggie then got a weird look on her face that slowly turned to a wicked grin. "Then again, it might give me the best chance to lock up the trouble making Banshee."
"Maggie!" Meryl cried in shock. "That is a huge abuse of your authority!"
"Calm down." Maggie said through a fit of laughter. "I was half joking."
"Which means your half serious."
"Maybe." Maggie replied innocently as she looked off into space letting the wonder images of herself leading that banshee to lock up play out in her head.
The whole time this was going on in your kitchen, you were miles away and years in the past. The story of an unknown escaped monster worried you and pulled an old memory out to the open. Something about the whole situation screamed 'DANGER' to you. As you looked at the title page again, that memory came back suddenly and you dived into it.

Dimly lit caverns marked your walk. The smell of blood and death was all around. Turning a corner you found bodies of both humans and monster, twisted and broken, laying all over the ground. Their faces told of the horror they witnessed as they unleashed their silent screams.
You passed through the door way and into the massive center room. There he stood, a man dressed in black tall and proud over his latest kill. He turned at your approach and your heart quickened. His lips are dripping red as they lift into a mocking smile, and his glowing orange eyes lock on you. He opens his mouth and laughs, a cold pitiless laugh that make the hair on your neck stand on end. You are terrified and angry at the same time. Rage over comes fear and you charge this monster with a war cry.

"Ow! Neil easy on the fur."
Maggie's sudden cry of pain snapped you back to attention. You noticed you had grabbed a hand full of the fur on Maggie's nose and pulled. You let go quickly and apologized while rubbing the spot you pulled on.
"Oh god, I'm so sorry Maggie. Are you alright?"
"Yes," Maggie said calmly. "What's wrong?"
"Sorry, it's just the idea of a monster criminal on the loose scares me a bit."
"It's alright, I understand. But what do you have to worry about? Under Gloom is miles away, and there's no reason for him to come out to these parts. You're worrying yourself over nothing sweetie."
Maggie smiled so sweetly at you, you couldn't help but return it. But you also couldn't relax, not internally. You hid your worry from Maggie and just sat silently on her nose for a while longer.
She was right of course...if this was a normal monster. But the chance of it being HIM was low. After all the trouble you and the others went through to stop him, they wouldn't just let him escape...right?
Thankfully Meryl pulled you from this unnerving thought. "So, Neil. You said you're off from work tomorrow, right? Want to come over and visit me for awhile?"
