This choice: You and Maggie take Sapphire to School  •  Go Back...
Chapter #2

Nightmare High

    by: Unknown
Once breakfast is over, Sapphire closes her book and then puts it away in her backpack just as Maggie places everything in the sink and puts you on her shoulder. “Ready for school Sweetie?” Maggie asks Sapphire. “Ready as I’ll ever be.” Sapphire was still worried about her math test. You feel Sapphire’s paw and smile at her. “Relax Baby,” you say. “You’ll shred." Sapphire laughs and soon the three of you are in the car. You’re on Maggie’s shoulder looking down at Sapphire who is still looking over her book. Sapphire put a lot of effort into her studies, a fact you appreciated a lot.

However, as Maggie is driving down the street, she’s forced to stop and you yell before you fall back and land in Sapphire’s backpack just as Sapphire is putting her book away. Maggie growls at the car that just cut her off. “You’re lucky I have to take my daughter to school, you jerk! Honestly Neil. They’ll give anyone a driver’s license these days. That’s when you hear a zipping noise and gasp. Sapphire didn’t know it, but she accidentally zipped you inside her backpack with her textbooks. As Maggie starts driving again, you climb a textbook. “Maggie!” you yell. “Sapphire! Stop the car!” But unfortunately neither your wife nor daughter can hear you. It looks like you’re going with Sapphire to Nightmare High.

You soon hear the door open and Sapphire runs out. “Bye Mom!” she yells. “Bye Dad! I’ll see you later.” If only she knew here dad was in her backpack. This was not good. You can only hope Maggie realizes something’s up. Sapphire walks into Nightmare High and finds Emerald, your rag doll niece waiting for her. Emerald smiles as Sapphire comes up and shakes her hand. “Emerald,” says Sapphire. “Good to see you cuz.” Emerald grins and shows the zipper over her mouth. Although you were glad that Meryl and Flint enchanted themselves a little one of their own, you wish that Emerald wasn’t so creepy. You can’t remember the last time she spoke.

Sapphire and Emerald walk into the schoolhouse and you watch as many monster teenagers both male and female pass by. Down the hall was Sapphire’s closest friends; Topaz the Chinese dragon, Onyx the Carbuncle and Sapphire’s B.F.F., Ruby the Orthrus. Makes you wonder why all Sapphire’s friends were named after gems. “Good morning Sapphire, Emerald.” Says Topaz as she opens her locker. Ruby walks up and gives Sapphire their secret handshake and you close your eyes. Sapphire wouldn’t like it if you knew. “Hey Ruby,” said Sapphire. “If you see your brother, tell him congratulations for me.” Ruby’s two heads give a smile. “Thanks Sapphire,” says the right head. “You don’t know,” says the left head. “How much it means..” “For Norville...” “To be working with machines.” You remember that Moxie recently gave Ruby’s brother a job at her garage. You’d tell Ruby congrats yourself, but you could never speak to her properly. Trying to communicate with two headed monsters gave you a monster headache.

Onyx, that carbuncle finally notices Sapphire and turns her head. You see that she’s eating some kind of candy, a little too early in the morning for that, but you couldn’t tell what it was. “Oh, Sapphire. Didn’t see you over the weekend G.F. Oh, you weren’t sick were you? You were sick and didn’t tell me? That’s just plain rude.” Sapphire lets out a roaring laugh. “I wasn’t sick Onyx. I was studying for Ms. Tavi’s big math test.” Onyx continues to stuff her face and then holds out the bag. “Knock it off Sapphire. You’re the smartest girl I know, you’ll do fine. Say, you want some candy coated humans? I’ve got plenty. You gasp in horror as Onyx mentions exactly what she was eating.

“Yuck!” yells Sapphire in disgust. “Onyx! I’m part human!” Realizing that she accidentally offended her friend, Onyx puts her snack away as Topaz simply rolls her eyes. “Too much sugar early in the morning ruins the brain,” says Topaz. “It is you I worry about Onyx.” “Hey,” says Ruby. “Where...” “Is Pearl.” Sapphire walks forward and then bumps against something, or rather someone. “Ouch!” Sapphire looks down at a familiar dark skinned gargoyle girl who has her arms crossed. “Oh, sorry about that Pearl. I didn’t...” “You didn’t see me,” says Pearl mockingly. “I’ve heard it all before.” Pearl may have been Sapphire’s friend but she had a temper on her. You couldn’t tell by looking at her but she’s abnormally small for a gargoyle. Since her aunt and cousin are as big as Maggie it’s especially frustrating for her. You wonder why Pearl would hang out with Sapphire and the girls given they obviously tower over her.

“I see you’re extra angry this morning Pearl,” says Topaz. “All that self-directed rage is eating you alive.” “Save the fortune cookies for after school Topaz,” says the gargoyle girl. “You’d be angry too if your boyfriend dumped you for a freaking nuckelavee. It’s like my Auntie Destiny says, men are poison.” “That’s only because she can’t accept that she was a victim of karma,” says Topaz. “She’s as much to blame for what happened as... what did you say his name was.” Pearl got so mad her eyes glowed bright. You gulp and hide further into Sapphire’s backpack. “Don’t make me take out your dragon balls.”

Before Pearl could do anything she’d regret, Sapphire lifts her up and lets out a sigh. “You remind me of my Grandma,” she says. “She’s always mad at Dad for something stupid.” Onyx lets out a laugh. “Yeah, that’s one problem when you marry outside your own species.” Onyx lets out a laugh before Emerald lightly taps her on the back of her head. You could just laugh at the carbuncle’s stupidity if it weren’t for the fact you just remembered you were in a high school for giant monsters and Sapphire had no idea.

Suddenly the ground begins to shake and you scream as you grab the spine of Sapphire’s math book. “Looks like Headmistress Wayne fell asleep again.” Says Sapphire. “She can,” “Sleep all day,” “If she wants.” Says Ruby’s two heads.

You shiver. Headmistress Wayne was the world’s biggest monster. She was almost twice Maggie’s height and that was saying something. The woman was no ordinary monster, but a monster mutated by human experiments. The woman was so big that her office was underneath the school and not inside it. According to Sapphire, Morgan isn’t mean at all, but Sapphire has never been Morgan’s office so she isn’t a reliable source.

Of course, Sapphire and her friends were heading to class now. You don’t remember Sapphire’s schedule so you don’t know which teacher she’ll run into. Well, which class are you unintentionally following your daughter to?

You have the following choices:

1. Art Class with Ms. Howler

2. Math Class with Ms. Tavi

*Noteb*
3. Gym Class with Ms. Hugo

4. History Class With Ms. Khamen

5. More Options

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
