This choice: They used your mother's brain. • Go Back...Chapter #7They used your mother's brain. by: Wassel Bracing yourself then as you listened to the balding doctor respond, "Your mother's." Which you pretty much should have guessed. Seeing how it was only the two of you in the car at the time. Your Auntie (who'd also been at the game with you) having offered to drop your friends off while you and your mom ran some errands.
"The impact of the crash resulted in quite a serious head injury I'm afraid, and we were left with no choice but to operate immediately."
This news hitting you like a ton of bricks. Uttering in both panic and shock, "Oh my God..."
"But rest assured, she is fine. Perfectly fine," Kerry told you. Setting your mind at ease. "Dr. Saunders and I just happen to be two of the leading brain surgeons in the country. If not... dare I say it... the world." Informing you rather proudly that, "She's already awake and responding well. And due to our highly advanced operating techniques, she'll be fit to leave the hospital in no time. With no lasting effects to speak of. In fact, if we hadn't have told you, you wouldn't even have realize she'd been harmed. We really are that good."
Dr. Kerry's pride clearly knowing no bounds. Looking very self satisfied with himself as he shared this news. Which, even though you knew absolutely nothing about brain surgery (or much of what he was saying at all) you were extremely relieved. It only being you and your mom since your dad died when you were little. Not wanting to even think for a second about losing her too.
You did have questions however. The two doctors having made mention of 'complications'. Complications that they'd yet to explain. Being told after bringing this up that, "Ah, yes... That is true. Things are a little more complicated than we made it seem." It being Dr. Saunders turn this time to respond.
"You see, Tim, as Dr. Kerry said, the procedure we used on your mother is still in the experimental stages. Legally it isn't supposed to be performed on an actual human yet. And certainly not in a hospital environment such as this. But... as your mother's injuries were rather severe and time sensitive we felt that it really was the best option. In order to save her life."
The elder, gray haired doctor explaining this all in a very calm and concise manner. Allowing you to easily follow along.
Asking them both then, "So what exactly are you saying?" Feeling your still half drugged body start to grow nervous again. None of this sounding particularly good.
"We're saying that the procedure we used was not authorized by either the hospital or the medical board," Kerry chimed back in, rather more curtly. "And if word got out that we performed it on a living subject we could both lose our jobs. Or even worse. We could even end up in prison."
Which to you didn't really seem fair at all. Replying, "But... But you said it yourself. It worked. You saved my mom."
"Yes, but the medical board doesn't see it like that," Saunders told you, "Hence the complications. And hence why we haven't told anyone else about this other than you. Even your mom doesn't know what really happened. Instead we told her that she bumped her head and was suffering from a concussion, same as you."
Kerry adding then, "Which is how we'd like it to stay; Between us. Do you think you'd be okay with that, Tim? Keeping this whole thing a secret."
Having obviously not expected to find yourself in a scenario like this. Especially not so soon after waking up. Being initially rather thrown.
Initially at least. It not taking you long to pull your still rather groggy head together and tell them, "I mean... yuh-yeah. Sure. I totally owe you after all." It being weird sure, and you didn't really like the idea of keeping secrets from your mother, but you weren't about to rat out the two men responsible for her being alive. The doctors explaining that the less people who knew the better. Having apparently only told you for liability purposes. Needing someone to sign off on it. Which, after pulling out a clipboard with several documents attached, you did.
"Thank you, Tim," Saunders warmly smiled, "We're glad you are able to be so understanding."
"No problem. So,uh... When can I go see her?" you asked. Being extremely anxious now. "When can we both get out of here?"
"Soon. You'll be able to soon," came his answer. "But right now you still need to get some rest as well. Your own injuries might not have been as serious as hers, but that doesn't mean you don't need time to recover."
Watching then as he moved towards the IV drip that had presumably been pumping drugs into your body. Telling you as he turned a dial, "So with that being said, we're going to give you a little something to help you sleep and then we'll be back to check on you in a few hours. Okay?"
It not appearing like you had much choice. Shrugging, "Okay. ...I guess."
And with that you once again felt the drugs starting to take effect. Growing light-headed as the world around you grew dark and hazy. Feeling yourself gradually falling into a dream...
