Experimental brain transplant surgery saves either your life, or someone very close.

This choice: Annie Olsen, the shy geek, with a secret crush on you.  •  Go Back...
Chapter #6

Annie Olsen, the shy geek.

    by: Wassel Author IconMail Icon
"...Annie Olsen."

So relived where you that it wasn't actually Randall, or any other guys you knew from school, that it didn't register right away what your mom had said. It sounding instead like some random name that had just come tumbling out of her mouth. Your brain quickly caught up on your ears however, realizing that she had said her instead of him, followed by a name that you knew very well indeed... Annie Olsen ...What the fuck!?

"You... you mean David is now a girl?!" you yelped, having at no point during this whole brain transplant conversation even considered that a possibility. Especially not a girl that you actually knew!

"Yes," she nodded. "It's been a difficult change naturally, but as the doctors explained she was the only viable candidate for the procedure. Her parents also gave the go ahead for the surgery. They felt she would have wanted your brother to have a second chance."

"Oh my God... I can't believe it. Annie Olsen..." This was such a bizarre concept to try and get your head around - picturing that very same girl in your head, and trying to somehow connect it to your little brother.

Unlike David - who could be loud and rebellious when he wanted to - Annie was an incredibly quiet, bookish girl who you weren't entirely sure you had ever actually spoken to. She seemed to fade completely into the background at school, and apart from the Math and Chess clubs and other boring shit like that, you were pretty sure all she ever seemed to do was read. Constantly wandering around on her own with a pile of books in her hand. She usually shyed away from crowds and social events, in fear of the various taunts that were often thrown her way. People making fun of her because of how 'brainy' she was, as well as her appearance.

Annie Olsen wasn't exactly what you would describe as the most attractive girl in school, nor even the most mediocre. She wasn't butt ugly, but she was kind of plain. Possessing slightly chubby features, long wavy brown hair that never really looked like it was brushed, and a pair of thick black glasses - the clothing accessory of any self respecting nerd. She was also quite short, being a little over 5 feet and kind of plump. Her stout figure usually decked out in the thickest, baggiest coats and sweaters she could find. This in turn, added to the Harry Potter ring-binder she never seemed to be without, led to the rather unfortunate nicknames 'Annie Plumper' and 'Chubby Potter' (amongst others). All in all, she wasn't exactly what you'd call cream of the crop when it came to lives you'd want to live. Not that your brother really had a choice in the matter though...

"She was actually in the car behind ours, with her parents." your father then told you, while you still taking this all in. "Apparently the impact of the truck caused an aneurysm in her brain. She was technically dead before she even made it to the hospital."

"Did you know her well?" your mom asked, trying to gage your feelings about all this (not really all that clued in on who you were and weren't friends with in high school).

"Yes..." you muttered almost without thinking, before quickly correcting yourself. "I mean, no. Not really. I'd seen her around and stuff, but I didn't really know her. She seemed so quiet and shy." You weren't exactly sure who really knew her if you were honest. Not seeming like the kind of girl who had a lot of friends.

Agreeing with this assessment, your parents presumably knowing a lot more about her now than you did, your mom then said, "Yes. Apparently she was. The poor girl. She didn't deserve this." Letting out a bit of a sniffle as she did.

Taking a moment to compose herself, your father jumped back in. "Her parents have been incredible brave and understanding," he told you, wrapping an arm round your mother's shoulder, "More so than I think we ever could have been."

Well they'd have to be, you thought, it being such an insane thing to have to ask - allowing your recently deceased daughter's body to have a complete strangers brain transplanted into it. As messed up and as hard to believe as this whole situation was, you were certainly glad that it hadn't been the other way round. That Annie hadn't been the one walking around in your little brother's skin.

"And for the moment David is staying with them, until we can get everything sorted out."

"I know this is a huge shock for you, Tim," your mother added, before you even had a chance to respond. "But he is still your brother underneath, no matter what he looks like now, or what we're supposed to call him around others. He's gonna still need us. More than ever. So you're gonna have to be strong."

Reigning in your objection to the fact that he was now living under some stranger's roof, rather than his own home - where he should be - aware that your mother was right, you responded, "I... I'll try." So much had occurred since you'd been out of it, so much that you had yet to discover or even understand. But the main thing was that David was apparently safe and doing okay (even if it was in Annie Olsen's body), and you were going to have to be there for him now. No matter what differences or petty squabbles the two of you had had in the past, or how much this whole thing seemed more like a bad dream than actual real life. You were his big brother. You loved him. It was time to show him that.

Going over a few more details then, about David, about Mr. and Mrs. Olsen (as well as Tabitha and Randall etc.), you watched as twenty or so minutes later Dr. Kerry returned, informing you all that he had to run a few tests, but that your parents were welcome to come back after.

Saying goodbye to them then, Dr. Kerry did his final check up, assuring you that everything looked fine and that you should be out by tomorrow - much to your delight. Though you had obviously been unconscious during pretty much your entire stay, your body really did feel like needed to be up and moving about again. Your legs and arms feeling a lot like dead weights. Thankfully, once the drugs began to wear off an hour or two later, two nurses assisted you out of bed and you were given a little exercise to get your limbs working again.

During all this however, your thoughts still remained on David and what he had now become. How was his life going to be now? He was a girl. And not just any girl. A socially awkward and extremely unpopular one at that. He had always been semi popular amongst his own crowd as far as you were aware (more so than you even), having recently gotten into that whole Emo thing with his friends. This now was about as far a jump as you could get. Although your mom had said he was doing okay, considering, you just hoped this was true and she wasn't just telling your what you wanted to hear. All you knew was that once you got out of hospital and actually had to face him for the first time - as Annie - well, you just hoped it was something you would actually be able to handle. After all, hearing that your brother was now Annie Olsen and actually seeing that he was now Annie Olsen were two different things entirely!

You have the following choices:

1. The following day, you are released from the hosital.

*Pen*
2. The following day, your parents bring David to see you.

*Pen* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
