“I … I guess we have to figure out how to live as each other,” Mike said, his 43 year old head hanging low. The two of them sat there in silence for a while, each quietly processing the enormity of the situation. “I’m sorry, I don’t even know what to say right now. I may be a guy now, but I’m also young again. I feel like I got the better part of all this. I’ll help you through this, don’t worry,” Sheila offered.
“Thank you, I think I’ll need all the help I can get,” he replied, looking down at his pudgy hands, examining them as he flipped them back and forth. “How am I going to live? I don’t know anything about ma… wait a minute,” as he was saying that he could picture complex equations and lesson plans that he should have no idea about. “I know math?” he asked out loud.
“Huh? What do you mean?” Sheila asked.
“I mean I remember all sorts of things about being a math teacher!” he explained, his eyes going wide. “I guess that makes sense. For you to live your life as an adult woman you have to know certain things to live out that life,” she said, wondering what new information she might have gained as well.
“I guess that true, it’s kinda scary though,” Mike replied. “I guess we should talk about ourselves. If we’re going to be stuck like this we’ll have to know about our new families and stuff,” he suggested. Sheila nodded. For the next while they exchanged information about their lives. Mike learned that Sheila’s parents had passed away some time ago and she was an only child so he didn’t have a family to speak of anymore.
He learned that his new best friend was Betty Sanders, one of the English teachers at the school. He got the sense from Sheila that there was more to that friendship, but she wasn’t too forthcoming and he figured he would find out soon enough. Mike exhaled a sigh of relief when Sheila told him that there wasn’t a boyfriend or anything like that in her life. He really wasn’t ready to deal with that.
After a while they both felt like they’d covered at least the important bits and pieces of their old lives. They were both in shock at the situation still, but felt like they had some sort of a grip on it.
