Cocasian was a cheap and nasty alternative to cocaine trafficked to the USA from a number of South-East Asian countries. The region didn't have many coca trees, but it did have plenty of humans, and so criminal chemists had figured the ingenious plan of using CRISPR gene splicers to insert coca tree DNA into humans. The coca proteins would then be filtered from their blood, milk, urine or even faeces, and processed into something that almost resembled cocaine.
The quirk of the drug was that the gene splicers used to produce it remained active for a long time, constantly fragmenting the DNA of the poor hosts the cartels used to manufacture it, spitting out billions of little plasmids of random host DNA that were too costly to filter out of the final product. These plasmids would lodge in the cells of anybody taking cocasian, giving the user the appearance of the ethnicity of the host (or hosts) used to produce it - typically a mixture of South East Asian, though there were rumours of afrocaine on the market too.
Cocasian was everywhere now, mixed in with and tricky to differentiate from the real cocaine. The effects were starting to become noticeable, and could take weeks to wear off, and many businessmen, celebrities and politicians were scrambling to voice pride in Thai or Philippino roots that hadn't existed months before.
Politicians... When it started to affect them, that was when the pressure was really placed on the TFPD to stop the flow of the drug, or at least find a way to tell the real stuff from the fake.
