Chapter #2

The Huntress

    by: Kingfisher Author IconMail Icon
"Watch out!" you hear her scream

"Huh, what?" you say as something quickly and tightly grabs your ankle. A quick jerking motion yanks you off of the ground and into the air, causing you to hit your head on the ground before completely hanging you by your leg with a ringing noise in your ears.

"Wh-What was that!?" you ask, kind of befuddled by what just happened.

"I did tell you to watch out, [Your Name]." replies your Elven companion.

"I didn't see it ther-"

"That's why it's called a trap." she retorts, interupting you. "If it was an ambush, you'd be in quite a bit of trouble. This just appears to be a hunting snare." she says, examening the rope and piton used to hold it to the ground from over the tree.

"Lucky me." you say, still hanging upside down with the feeling of your head expanding due to all of the bloodflow now rushing to your ringing head.

"Can you help me down now, please?"

"Sure..." she says, drawing her dagger.

"No no, wait!!!" you say, but it was too late. With a single swipethe rope was cut, and you were on e again on terra firma, but still somewhat upside down. The landing didn't exactly help with your headache either...

"ouch..." you say, getting to your feet with a stumble.

"You're welcome." she says with a smile "Next time you go daydreaming, don't do it on a hunt."

"Point taken."

"Ready to keep going? Or are Humans just of a weak constitution?" she says

"Are you seriously trash-talking me right now?"

"How was it?"

"Not as bad as the last one..."

Which was true, her last attempt at trash-talking went something along the lines of 'You move with the grace of a pregnant yak with no hoofs'...

A couple of hours later, you and Lin'ora were back in town at the local trapper's hut, skinning the hares that you and her caught that morning.

"You never get used to the smell do you?" you ask. Watching it wasn't too hard of a task, but the smell was just awful.

"I have."

"It was a rhetorical question, Lin"

"I'm unfamiliar with the term." she says, now wiping her hands clean from the process of carving rabbits.

"It means a question that's not supposed to be answered." you say back. Sometimes, you forget that she's not human and how alien this world is to you.
A compliment from your kind could get yourself killed by many races here and you haven't even seen a tenth of them yet.

"That's... an interesting concept." she says after thinking about the words to say.

"So, we have food for the time being. Maybe we ahould see what they have for quests at the guild?" you suggest.

"Good idea."

You and Lin'ora head to the guild hall, which wasn't too far from where you were, and head to the jobs desk.

"Hey, Berk. How's it going?" you ask

"Surviving." he says, obviously tired from handling all of the job orders. You always found it easier to talk to Berk, since he was also human. "What can I help you with?" je asks as he scratches his beard.

"We were wondering if you had any jobs opened."

"Well... Let's see."
