Careening through nightmare visions of the future

This choice: "Can you tell us anything about what's involved?" Jane presses.  •  Go Back...
Chapter #6

"Can you tell us anything..." Jane pressed.

The lawyer pursed his lips, deep in thought. "No, I can't reveal anything about what lies ahead." Exchanging a look with one of the other lawyers, they both silently nod their heads.

"But, I can say, the bequest is easy if there is no challenger."

You want to sink lower in your seat, as all your cousins eyes swivel in your direction.

"This is a challenge?" Jane said, "I can still back out?"

"Yes." The lawyer answered crisply.

The other adding, "Though you won't find out anymore until we know who's going on with the challenge."

Jane scowls at the document, scanning through it for details, but it's boilerplate legalese.

You're kinda relieved when she turns to the back page, and signs beside her typed name.

Bill looks thoughtful, shrugs and then smiles.

"Where's the harm?" Walking across with a stiff, awkwardness, you aren't convinced by his faux casual air. He doesn't even pretend to read it.

With three signatories, the ice breaks, and soon five more sign up, for Lionel's little adventure.

The lawyers press the others to sign either as accepting, or refusing to participate. Only three refuse to continue. Running an eye down the list of signatures, they share another look and nod in satisfaction.

The three are escorted back into the main party, and the door closed behind them. The lock sounds ominously loud as he turns the key, locking them you.... and you in.

"Everything seems to be in order." One folds it, and puts it in his pocket, "I'll return the papers to the office."

"And I'll drive them." The other sounded less enthusiastic.

"Can you tell us now?" a voice piped up from the bustling group of participants.

"No.... not yet."

He guides you out a side door, and you see a minibus standing ready. It's new, or very recently valeted. But you're guided aboard, as the lawyer grinds the gears at first. It's soon passing through the town, and leaving that behind for countryside. A disgruntled murmur comes from several people, as the driver still refuses to reveal any more information.
