In the deepest of space, humanity ventures out into a new frontier for a variety of reasons. Exploration, Science, Colonization.
Due to Earth Legislation, Space Ships are not co-ed, and Men and Women must man different vessels to complete these missions. And in Year 2086, a strange event that irreparably altered not only the two crews of the mission forever, but also the tastes, trends and how we understand science of a fledgling colony.
But how did it shake out?
Option One: Artificial Gravity: The ships enter a strange plasma wave that fries some vital mechanisms on board, specifically the artificial gravity. The Men's ship has it's gravity completely deactivated, now in an environment where physical taxation is nigh impossible, and still reliant solely on a diet of high calorie protein paste. Meanwhile, the women's ship has the gravity massively increased, with every single movement turned into a massive workout. By the time the two ships land, the two crews see very different results.
Option Two: Stasis Malfunction: Travelling in stasis pods, a small line of programming accidentally goes awry. On the Men's ship, the electrostatic muscle stimulants are switched off, and the nutrient paste they're tube fed is unable to turn off, resulting in the male half of the crew bloating up. Meanwhile, the Electro Muscle Stim is hyperactivated on the female crew.
Option Three: Aliens!: A classic. The ships are secretly intercepted by an advanced race of aliens, looking to experiment with this strange new species biology. Particularly how they grow, and the difference with how Estrogen and Testosterone reacts to their biotech.
