There was a peaceful hour and a half as both women dozed and read and enjoyed the weather. Anne was the first to become unsettled. She had repositioned herself so that she lay on her back with her toes near Sarah’s head and her head near Sarah’s feet. It wasn’t an accident. She was consciously wiggling her toes, crossing her ankles, and generally keeping her bare feet active in the hope of catching Sarah’s eye and enticing her to touch. Meanwhile the sunglasses she wore kept her eyes hidden well enough that it wasn’t obvious she was barely taking her eyes from Sarah’s feet. Sarah, obliviously was swinging her feet in the air, enjoying the cool breeze it created on her soles, and occasionally placing her feet on the sand to feel the warmth. Her legs were getting uncomfortably warm in the jeans and she was debating removing them. Anne interrupted her thoughts by catching her ankle as it swung. Anne beamed at her as she turned. “I’m getting hungry, Sarah, shall we go find some lunch?” “Yeah, sounds good” They stood and dusted themselves off and Anne pulled on her shorts and picked up her shoes and top. Sarah grabbed her own shoes and as she was about to get her socks, Anne hurried her. “Come on... all you need is shoes, you’re fully dressed!” Not quite, Sarah thought, but she did as she was told and stuffed her bare feet into her vans and followed Anne. As they reached the car park, Anne stopped “ah shit... I forgot my bag” She stuffed her shoes and top into Sarah’s hands before running back onto the beach. She’d done this on purpose. Reaching the towels Anne retrieved the bag. She picked up Sarah’s discarded socks from the sand too. On the walk back to Sarah she passed a bin which she deposited the sandy socks in. “Sorry, I’m all set now, let’s go!” She smiled internally. She was making progress.
