Grace smiled at Leah. “Oh nothing much. I just got back from class. My aunt left me her old Blackberry. I was going to check it out in my room for a while.”
Leah yawned and nodded her head. Erin looked up and smiled.
“No problem, we need to change anyway. Maybe we can get some lunch somewhere soon.”
Grace smiled and shook her head at the fact that Erin was currently eating. “Sure, that sounds like fun.”
With that Grace walked into her room and shut the door behind her. She sat down at her desk and began to think about what she could do. To test it out it would be best to try something simple to start. That would at least seem prudent. So without really knowing what would happen, Grace punched the Historical button and she was a bit surprised when the screen came up with nothing more than “Enter Description of Desired Change”
Grace sat back and smiled. She wasn’t prepared for that. Looking down at her blue socks, she looked back at the screen. Keep it simple to start.
She typed in “I put on white socks this morning instead of the blue socks.” She shrugged her shoulders and hit Enter.
The screen went blank for a moment and came back up. “Related changes to this universe negligible. Hit Enter again to make change.”
Grace looked down at her socks again, looked at the screen and with another shrug, hit Enter. A quick bright light caused her to shut her eyes. Blinking slowly she looked around and everything looked the same. Almost not wanting to look at her feet, she slowly tilted her head down. Her socks were white.
“No Way!”
She sat back in her chair, her head spinning. So many opportunities, so many things to change. Looking at the poster on her wall of an 80’s Era Rachel McLish, Grace looked at her own arm. She had signed up at the gym but had only gone a few times. Gaining any muscle would be a challenge. Smiling, Grace looked at the device again.
“If this thing can change my socks, I wonder if it can change me.”
She rubbed her chin and thinking for a moment, hit Historical Again on the device and started typing. “I started working out with weights a year ago. I worked out at least 5 days a week and grew stronger and more muscular.”
Grace paused as she knew she wasn’t being very specific, figuring this would test the device. She also knew that she could cancel out if it gave an undesirable response. So when she hit enter, this time there was more of a delay. The device came back with an expected follow up.
“Define stronger and more muscular. Note that the device can take your body type and create a normal progression based upon your DNA. However, more dramatic changes are possible, but with a related historical change and the possibility of a shift or creation of an alternate universe.”
Grace smiled. So that’s how this thing works. You can make adjustments to keep things in perspective. She suspected that’s how her Aunt did so well in life, but now she had to wonder why she didn’t do more, or why she didn’t figure out a way to cheat death. Scrunching her small nose as she normally did when she was thinking through a tough problem; Grace took her time before she began to type again. As she typed, Grace knew she was about to start an adventure and hopefully have a little fun.
