Your gasp attracts the doctor's attention and they rush over to help you sit up. The adrenaline at this shocking news about your girlfriend overrides the remnants of the painkillers, and you blearily look the first doctor in the eyes.
"Allison? How is she?" you manage to ask.
"She's ... she's okay now, son, don't worry," the second doctor says, putting his hand on your shoulder and sparing a tense glance at the first doctor.
"I'm Doctor Saunders. And this is Doctor Kerry," he says, introducing the both of them to you.
"I heard what you said about the transplant," you blurt out, forestalling any idle chatter. "I want to know how Allison is - and 'who' she is? And I want to see her now!"
"Tim, calm down," Doctor Kerry says comfortingly. "Everything is alright. Let's get you into a wheelchair and you can see her. She's still asleep but should be waking up soon. The surgery was more successful than I could have ever imagined - the brain connections are good and she should have complete control of her body. But she will be shocked by all this and will need your support more than ever."
You nod understandingly as they help you up. You are still very unsteady so it takes several minutes to get out of the room. As they wheel you into Allison's recovery room, Doctor Saunders pauses for a moment.
"Tim, before you go in, I need to tell you about the donor body. I don't want to shock you but the only donor available was..."
