Spell Book: An accidental discovery. Kinda...

by: Mr. George Author IconMail Icon
Simon had found the weird old book, in a second-hand shop, available with nine others for a dollar. He'd only really wanted the battered copy of the Belgariad that he'd spotted in the bundle. It was the Chinese ... or was it Japanese characters on the cover that made him think of his friend in Scotland. They'd met (virtually), exchanging opinions on Sci-Fi and fantasy. A shared love for Tolkien, Donaldson, Martin and Jordan, made them exchange opinions.

He liked her honesty, it was brutal and frank without an ounce of compromise.

Hoping to keep the book as a surprise for her, his intrigued fingers traced their way over the embossed characters on the cover. It might be expensive, it might be trash... but there was a certain elegance to the characters. He dismissed the thought that it was gold-leaf that was pressed into them. Hoping it wasn't an insult, he scowled at the characters.
危ない The three large characters were in one line. Beneath that another three followed: 内の魔.

He hadn't flicked beyond the introduction, and the paragraph of that foreign script, so Simon never discovered that the majority of the book was in English... albeit broken, with poor grammar.

He had to assume it was the title and the author, but he popped it into the padded envelope, and the envelope into the letterbox. It would probably take a few days to reach Scotland, and his Scottish friend... Scottish, not Scotch... That was the whisky. She told him, adding Whiskey was never spelled with an -e-.

Whistling to himself, Simon walked home waiting for their next face to face, worrying that he couldn't keep the secret too long. He hoped it'd arrive soon.
