Simon examined the brown parcel he had found in his mailbox upon returning home from class. He had assumed it was for his roommate, Kim, as he didn’t often get mail but his name was labeled clearly on the packaging. He was alone now, sitting on the futon of his apartment. It was a Thursday night so most of the people he knew would be home studying. Or in Kim’s case she’d be bartending late. So he really didn’t have much else to rude.
Ripping into the packaging and peeling open the box, Simon found a grey recording device inside. It was a simple design; the only buttons were record, stop, and play and there were no other features. No lines or seams or anything. Beneath it was a small piece of paper, a note.
“Record your deepest desires and make them real,” Simon read aloud, unamused. “Sounds like a crock of shit.”
Though he was curious. Who sent? Why’d they send? What was with the cheesy note? He leaned back and bounced the Dictaphone from hand to hand thinking of something to record. Looking around the small apartment, his eyes stopped on the kitchen sink and he frowned. It was piled high with dirty dishes. Kim had said she would clean those days ago. She was a good roommate and pretty cute, but a messy sink was a pet peeves of Simon’s. Though it would be a perfect test, he thought. He pressed the record button.
“The dishes in the sink are clean and put away,” he recorded, still skeptical. He pressed stop and heard a strange sparkling sound. It was barely audible and he had no idea where it came from. He stood up and looked around the room a little before he noticed the sink. The dishes were gone, the sink empty and clean. Curious he walked into the kitchen and checked the cupboards. Sure enough the dishes were there, clean and sparling.
“Whoa, ok,” he said looking at the device again. “So it does work, huh?”
