Nick was already riding ahead to get into the bars before the evening drunks arrived and had all the most attractive wenches for themselves. Seras shook her head in frustration knowing he was already likely to find the one that had someone sweet on them and with a large jealous streak. It wouldn’t be so bad if he didn’t seem to take such joy in winning over the attached ladies. He knew he was getting into trouble yet he did nothing to stop himself.
The thief knew there was little chance of changing the behavior of the man at this point so she didn’t try. Besides, she had work to do in Port Haven and Nasty Nick could be a distraction at the best of times. There was a stench to the air in this port city from the processing of whales, very little of the creatures were allowed to go to waste because there was a profit in all of it but the price the city paid for the prosperity was forever having the foul stench of death and rotting from the air. The rich had the best of it, as the usually did, up in there mansions on the surrounding hills but even they were forced to constantly burn incense and scented candles to fight back the stomach-turning odors which had brought them their profits.
King Emeril had told her that his enemies had been going missing in this city which would normally not displease a ruler but the talk of revolt was becoming more than idle talk and his son Prince Wesley was doing little to quell the sentiments. Seras imagined the main problem for the King was that only the small fish were being taken leaving the big fish in the area to gather power and form rebellion in earnest.
Her travels had never brought her here before but she had been to places like this before. It was newly conquered territory where some of the old guards were left in place so that the profits would not stop coming in but as time went on that old guard became more hindrance than a help. If they were smart they would realize this and get out, make themselves indispensable or try and get rid of the new rulers. It appeared they had chosen rebellion, it wasn’t surprising the nobility chose bloodshed, why shouldn’t they, it was rarely their blood that got shed. There was a lot of profit in war and a lot of new positions of power that would open up.
Seras doubted the King would even mind some bloodshed but he didn’t want it to get in the way of the profits the Port was bringing him and it looked like the Prince might be in league with the those who desired rebellion. He wouldn’t be the first son or last who tried to take over for there Father before natural death brought them to an end.
