Sir Garrett decided he wanted to complete this mission as soon as possible so he sent Thunder to a nearby monastery of his order. His horse would find the way with easy as it was smarter than many a man he had met over the years. He dreamed of being back in the arms of his dear Princess Fina and take her as his bride. Trudging through the thick swamp made him glad he had sent Thunder back because this was no place for man or beast.
His heavy armor sank him further into the mud and soft ground than he would have liked but he tried to be as careful with his steps as he could. The paladin was being to question if his future Father-in-law had sent him here to die. There were many people far better suited for swamp travel and fighting then him yet Sir Garrett who had little experience if any experience in the swamp had been the one King Emeril had sent against the evil.
If he was optimistic in his thoughts it could be that the enemy he faced was one he was good at dispatching but the rumors of what was lurking out here had been very vague. Even rumors usually gave some hint of what sort of dangers were to be faced like if it was magic or mundane but in his rush to complete the quest he hadn’t bothered to ask vital questions. He reached out with a prayer to see if the gods could guide him in this quest.
Evil filled his senses but that was to be expected considering where he was. A dark empire had been here thousands of years ago and they had filled the ground with blood and sacrifices. Even all of these centuries later the ground was still stained with the evil. Sir Garrett said a prayer for the dead so they might be at rest, it was something he liked to do every time he came near this place in his travels. Perhaps in time, the evil might even fade from the land.
A pile of skulls looked promising to him for what he was looking for. He drew his blade and approached the bones with caution for what might be lurking nearby. This could be something old or new and wouldn’t know until he got closer. Some of the lizard people liked to mark their grounds with the bones of their enemies. If the skulls were mostly of lizardmen it would be a mark but if it was a heavy variety of sentient races it was likely old. All were slaves the Empire of the Titans, beings feared even by the gods. The world had been scarred by the battle that ended the reign of those powerful beings. If one of them was the cause of the trouble it would be a problem beyond the ability of a single paladin to stop. He shuddered at the thought as he approached the marker.
