It was a Friday morning in May and Melanie did not want to get up for school. There was still a month of school left and she was ready for the summer. She couldn't wait to be done with the eight grade and with middle school. Melanie groggily crawled out of bed and made her way to the bathroom. Her head was spinning and she felt way more tired than she usually did in the morning.
In the bathroom, Melanie splashed some water on her face and started at herself in the mirror. What is going on? Why is my head pounding like this?
That's when she suddenly remembered the dream she had last night, the voice in her head. It had told her that she now had the power to swap anything with another person as long as she had their permission. It sounded absurd, but maybe, just maybe, this pounding in her head was due to the fact that she had been imbued with this power.
Excited to test it out, Melanie burst out of the bathroom, almost plowing into her older sister Amy, who was on her way downstairs.
"Woah!" Amy gasped in surprise. "Be careful, Mel."
"Sorry, Sis!" Melanie squeaked before returning to her room.
After she got herself ready for the day, Melanie headed downstairs. Looking around, she thought about trying out her power with her family to see if it was real. Her mother Olivia, a self-employed hair stylist and beautician, was waiting on the girls to get ready so she could drop them off at school on the way to the salon she owned downtown. Her father Joseph was sitting at the table, reading the newspaper and enjoying his morning coffee. He would be leaving for work soon. Then there was Amy, who was eating an apple as her breakfast.
