John nodded, feeling more than a little bad about how he had exploded at Chris, particularly feeling sorry about what he had said to the boy who had more likely than not lost all but just a shred of his self esteem.
They perused racks and tables, bins and baskets, sometimes drifting apart and others coming together. There was a whole lot of junk at this garage sale, that much was surely true. Beyond the large clothes, there were weird shoes, odd cooking devices, garish and gaudy trinkets, and even some video game devices.
"Find anything interesting?" asked Chris, a hand on his big, burgeoning belly. The boy sure was fat- it seemed even the large clothes he was currently wearing were a bit constricting, cutting into a lard riddled waist that boomed downwards. John surveyed the poor boy with a hint of pity, then nodded.
"A couple of things," he responded, "But mostly junk."
Chris seemed to have more or less the same experience.
"So what did you find?" he asked, stepping toward John laboriously.
John had tossed a couple of things in a basket, which he now started showing to Chris.
"Well, like I said," he began, "Not much interesting stuff- and even the interesting stuff may as well be junk."
"Just show me!" Chris said, a bit of sweat collecting on his brow, "I'm gonna sit down, I'm feeling a little tired."
John couldn't believe a person his age was tired after the mild bit of activity the two of them had just engaged in, but this was simply a testament to how fat and out of shape Chris was. Chris found a lawn chair to sit in, which he pulled under him. It creaked slightly under his weight, but it held- though it was a bit constricting, pushing his fat this way and that as he sat down on it.
"Right," began John, pulling things out of the basket one at a time, "Well, there are some video games here that are kind of interesting- dunno if I've ever heard of these. Then again, I'm not sure we'd have the system to play any of these, so they may be useless. There's some weird rings here- these seem to be a pair. Also this necklace... only one of these, though. Then I found this weird scanner looking thing- not sure it would even turn on, though. This chemistry set looks a little promising, but it seems to be missing a few things. Finally, I found this old book."
John laid the things he had found at the sale before Chris and looked up at him.
"I don't know, what do you think?"   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
