The barbarian came to the crossroads, astride her great riding ox, Enormerous -- for horses could not long bear her weight. Behind her was a path of pillage and destruction a hundred miles long. She turned her head and looked down the mountain at the burning fires. It had been a profitable week, and her packs and saddlebags bulged with treasure.
Her stomach growled tightly. She had eaten only light meals while on her rampage, preferring to stay quick on her feet, and now it was catching up to her -- although she could go for quite a while without food when she had to, she needed an absolutely enormous meal when the time came. She surveyed her options.
Down the hill she could see the tiled roofs of a quaint little human hamlet through the trees. Humans could be iffy -- they didn't tend to like ogres -- but they could always be counted on to have food on hand, and be willing to part with it in exchange for money. And she had LOTS of money.
On the other hand, the road winding off to the right bore the telltale signs of goblin passage. Goblins were less likely to have much to eat on hand, but they were easy to bully, and she could always roast a few of them up in a pinch.
Or she could just make camp here and have Enormerous for dinner. It wasn't like she'd never done it before. Technically, he was Enormerous the Fifth. And that was the fastest way to get something into her belly, which was loudly demanding meat.
