This choice: She turns into a seagull and flies around the island • Go Back...Chapter #8She turns into a seagull by: DougTF Her ant form scurries out of the main room, and is small enough to get under the door into the mud room, which actually is open to the outside. Melanie the ant clicks approvingly, and then turns back into her tiny human self, still blue, still doll like. She re-enlarges but not all the way, and braces herself, concentrating and turning into a seagull. She shakes out her wings briefly, getting used to the still different sensations of being a seabird. Mentally swallowing, she steels herself as she wills her mind to be that of a gull.
Flapping her wings and taking flight, she gains altitude in the cold air and circles the house, going higher and higher. She squawks in delight, her mind fully embracing all the instinctive behaviors of a gull. Flying toward town, she smells something wonderful and follows the scent, coming to a...landfill??? There are hundred of other gulls here, picking through garbage and finding food. At first she is repulsed, even as she feels her bird mind wanting desperately to land and eat. Mel struggles with it, but gives in, shoving her human awareness a little deeper, letting the gull instincts take over. She lands and starts flipping through trash, finding a moldy piece of chicken and her beak snaps it up. Her human mind wants to gag until she realizes it tastes amazing! She gets into it, letting her awareness merge back in a bit, though keeping her gull senses. This is wonderful! What would be stomach churning rot to her human taste buds and gut are a fine meal for her gull sensibilities. She eats her fill, flying away with the other gulls, roosting with them at the ferry terminal seawall, not at all cold in the winter chill and brisk wind off the ocean. Melanie chuckles to herself that when she wants a nice meal out, all she needs to do is turn into seagull and visit Che Landfill. But she also makes a mental note to never, ever, turn herself into a dung beetle.
Tucking her head under her wing a bit, she settles in with the other gulls to sleep, figuring this is what the gulls do, and why bother flying home? She is then startled awake by a loud horn, squawking madly with her roostmates, as the first ferry of the day breaks port, its horn serving as a wake up buzzer to her and the fellow gulls. She flies off with them for a time, then angles for her family house on the island, landing and going back into the mudroom. She turns back to her human self, or the version of it she came up with herself and opens the door, walking back in. She's back to full size, still smoothed over like a Barbie, still slightly blue, and considers what to try next. She also wonders what would happen to her if something happened to her while an ant or a gull or whatever, like if she had gotten shot, or an eagle killed her as a gull, would she die? Can she die? Just then she sees a dark fin cutting through the water not too far off shore. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
