Explosions in the distance continued, as fire spread through the base, hitting gas pipelines, and other stores. Violet heard the sounds of 'The Mystique's' henchmen and women, as they fled the destruction. In these cases, her back-up, the military were normally slow to appear. The logic being to allow any remaining supporters to fight it out amongst themselves, or to run. In either case, it merely risked lives to rush in.
The sound of air-cars, and the distant chugging of boats heading for the horizon punctuated the night for Violet. Stifling a yawn, she found a cave beneath the cliff face, and set about preparing a camp-fire, and readying herself for a long wait and inevitable rescue.
As she yawned again, she caught sight of the goop of the sleeves of her tattered uniform. While it didn't feel like it burned on contact, it clearly wasn't safe. The idea of using her arm as a pillow, would bring it into contact with her face. She shuddered at the idea of accidentally blinding herself with carelessness. Reluctantly, she pulled off the rest of her uniform, until she was completely naked. The front panel, disguised as a logo sparked randomly as the communicator/transponder was dissolved by the goo.
She washed it cautiously in the river, but even that treatment was a little too rough for it. Her hands had the same blotches on them. Large patches of piebald skin ran up her arms joining with the marks on her torso. It looked like a rather uneven tan, a natural skin tone. If it had been even, she'd have admired it as a healthy tan, her own pale pink looking almost unhealthy in comparison.
Abandoning the remaining threads of her outfit, Violet returned to the cave. The small campfire there, crackling as it consumed the leaves and branches. There wasn't much fuel, most of the wood being too green, too healthy, too wet to burn. But she curled up, as much protecting the fire from blowing out with her body, as she was receiving heat from it. A bed made from the ferns, leaves and general greenery.
The fire sparkled through her closed eyelids, as her body warmed, and she fell asleep.
