I decided, perhaps against my better judgement, to follow this woman into her "coffee shop". I vaguely remembered my mom and dad talk about how they first met at one, long ago when that was still legal. I made a note to get out of here when school let out, so that it wouldn't make my parents suspicious. When we got to the main counter, Ann turned back towards me.
"Now, normally this kind of thing would cost some money, but I'm willing to make an exception for you, forever, if you decide to work here with your friend."
As if on cue, Aaron walked out, carrying what appeared to be a bag of black shells. He stopped dead in his tracks once he set it down and turned to face me.
"Eric! What... are you doing here... isn't there still school?" He stated rather meekly.
"Relax, Aaron, I was just offering your friend a job here, and all that entails. You know that we need the manpower to keep money rolling in. Besides, I sense a rebellious streak in this one, which is perfect for an establishment like this."
"Very well, I accept. So, tell me how this place works?"
"That," Ann replied, "would take too long, but let me just say that if you take a drink, you can become practically anyone you wish, and live for a bit in their shoes. You can get free coffee after hours, and serve drinks and keep order during operational hours. Don't worry about your parents, by the way, I will personally make sure that are fine with you being here. Other than that, your pay is determined by how much you sell. Also, I would like for you to start today. Is all of that clear?"
"yes, of course. So what would you have me do?" I responded, both stunned and impressed with how this business operated. After a moment of thought, Ann...
