"Hey how much of last night do you remember?" Sakura asked. This wasn't an uncommon question for Sakura to ask Naruto. Sakura was the apprentice of Tsunade, and Naruto was the apprentice of Jiraiya. Like their masters before them, both Sakura and Naruto had developed a taste for sake and often would go out drinking together. Then the next morning Sakura would ask him what he remembered of the night with an amused look on her face and the two would reminisce and joke about their night.
But this time... this time Sakura had a genuinely curious look on her face. There was no hint of playfulness like there usually was.
As Naruto tried to remember what happened last night, he couldn't help but reflect how much his and Sakura's friendship had changed since their academy days.
When Naruto returned from his training trip with Jiraiya all those years ago, he and Sakura started growing much closer. When she found out about his secret she became protective of him, but their friendship during those times was nothing like it was now. After the war, and after Naruto brought Sasuke back, he and Sakura had become best friends. They saw each other at least daily and shared all of their troubles with one another. Well... Sakura shared all of her troubles and then threatened Naruto when he tried to hide his which usually got him to come clean...
But that was all the further the two went. Now that Sasuke was back, Naruto knew Sakura's heart was out of his reach. So he stopped flirting, stopped asking her out on dates and just focused on being the best friend he could possibly be while trying to ignore the fact that it would only be a matter of time until the woman of his dreams would run into the arms of his biggest rival- a man who tried to kill him on more than one occasion.
"Well?" Sakura pressed, effectively drawing Naruto out of his reminiscing.
"Umm..." Naruto scanned his memories of the night before. He remembered picking Sakura up at the hospital after her shift ended and she had been really down about a particularly brutal shift where she lost two patients. Then Naruto took her to the bar close to the hospital and ordered three bottles of sake, and then... And then...
"Not much of anything really." Naruto replied. "I just remember buying 3 bottles of sake."
"I see." Sakura noted.
"Why? Did something happen?" Naruto asked. He was starting to get weirded out by Sakura's behavior. She should be calling him a light weight or something at this point, not staring at him with a contemplative look on her face.
"Hmm? Oh, not really." Sakura replied airily. "Nothing out of the ordinary anyways."
