Chapter #3

Stop him and ask for help

“Brian, wait,” said Heather.

“Yes,” said Brian.

Heather didn’t keep a spare key under a mat like some people do. And she knew all of her windows would be locked. She didn’t want to ask for help, or be seen naked, but she didn’t know what else to do. She couldn’t let Brian leave without telling him the truth. Better him than going out looking for other neighbors. “I need your help.”

“Sure. What do you need?”

“I need to use your phone to call a locksmith.”

“You’re locked out of your house?”

“Yes. I didn’t say anything before because I was embarrassed.”

“Don’t be. It happens to lots of people.”

“Not like this,” she said silently.

“Come on over.”

“I can’t. There’s one more thing.”

“What?”

“When I got locked out, I was, um, naked,” she said, embarrassed.

Brian was shocked to hear that. “You’re naked?!” A part of him wanted to take a look over the fence, but he didn’t. “I’ll go get you something to wear.” He ran to his house and got a T-shirt, shorts, and sneakers. Then he came back and handed them to her without attempting to get a peek at her naked body.

“Thank you.” Heather was grateful for the clothes and that Brian didn’t take the opportunity to look at her or laugh at her. She quickly put them on and then went over to his house. She called a locksmith.

“Now I have to get to work. You can stay here until the locksmith comes. Then lock the door when you leave.”

“I will, and thank you again.”

“No problem.” He turned to leave, and then thought of something else to say. “I was just thinking. Why didn’t you just break a window to get back in?”

That thought never crossed Heather’s mind, which made her feel worse about the situation. “I wasn’t thinking, I guess. I was just trying to not be seen.”

“Yeah, I understand. See you later.”

The locksmith came soon after and Heather got back into her home. She was glad Brian had been there for her. If he hadn’t, her day might have gone a lot differently, and a lot worse.
