Chapter #3

"On second thought..."

    by: citywalker Author IconMail Icon
"You know," David thought aloud, "on second thought, it might be a good idea to keep the effects of the pendant to myself for a while. I mean, I trust you guys and all, but maybe it would be fun if I changed myself or you without you realizing it was me doing it."

"What are you talking about?" Paul asked with an annoyed look on his face. "You just showed us the pendant! If something changed, how would we not know it was you?"

A sly grin crossed David's face. "Oh, maybe if I do this." He thought for a moment, making sure what he was about to say next would be right, then continued. "I wish that I was the only one who was aware of the power of the pendant, and that any changes I make with it would be accepted as reality by everyone else, unless I say otherwise."

His two friends stared at him blankly for a moment, and the pendant began to glow. David noticed, however, that neither Paul nor Sam were looking at the pendant or seemed phased in any way whatsoever. In fact, Paul even yawned, starting to look bored, as the glow faded.

"Whatever you're babbling on about," Paul said, "I don't really care. Ya know, it's getting late. I should probably get home and finish my homework for school tomorrow."

"Yeah," Sam nodded his head in agreement. "We've got that quiz in Geography tomorrow that I really need to study for."

David smiled, trying his best to hide his amusement. If the pendant worked as advertised, he would never need to study or worry about a quiz or test again. For a moment, he thought about wishing that Sam and Paul would stay overnight, or even wishing that tomorrow was a weekend, but he decided to let them go. There would be plenty of time for him to have fun with Sam and Paul later. And besides, he had a bigger goal in mind.

"Good night, guys," he said after walking down the stairs with his friends and seeing them out the door. He held off on wishing some sort of practical joke onto them as they left, instead waiting until his brother Wes came back with his friends to try out the pendant.

He sat at the kitchen table as Wes, Mark, and Josh came in. Wes went immediately to the refrigerator and grabbed three bottles of Gatorade, keeping one for himself and throwing the other two guys one each. "Whew, what a workout," he said as he wiped the sweat from his brow. Finally noticing David sitting at the table, Wes turned to him and chuckled. "What are you doing there, Tiny? Did you get lost and forget where you were going?"

David didn't answer right away, thinking about what would be the best way to handle this. The possibilities seemed endless. He could shrink Wes and the other guys down, making them literally the "tines". He could grow himself up to the ceiling or even bigger, looming over them with his height. There were so many ideas he had, but he quickly realized that his thoughts were turning to revenge awfully quickly. They were enjoyable enough thoughts, sure, but he began to feel a little guilty for having them. Sure, his brother had treated him like crap for as long as he could remember, and he wanted to get back at him for it, but that wasn't the most healthy attitude to have now, was it? Especially having the pendant now and any power it held, David began to realize that if he also had a responsibility, a duty to try to make the world a little better. Sure, he could still have some fun with it, but if he went too far, if he gave in to his darker side... well, there would be no turning back from that.

"Helllllo?" Wes's impatient and slightly annoyed voice interrupted his thoughts. "Earth to Tiny. Come in, Tiny." Mark and Josh chuckled a little as Wes rapped David's head with his knuckles.

As he did so, however, David instantly realized what he should wish for. Looking at the three older boys in the room, he began to smile. "I wish," he said softly, "that I got along with the three other boys in this room as well as I got along with Sam and Paul."

Almost instantly, the look on Wes's face changed, going from one of derision and scorn to a friendly, excited smile. Mark and Josh, too, changed in demeanor, becoming much more relaxed and amenable to David's presence in the room.

"So, David," Wes started, sitting down at the table while he continued to drink his Gatorade, "you should come work out with us next time."

David started to beam, amazed at how quickly and how well the wish went into effect. "Really?"

"Yeah!" Mark chimed in, walking over next to David. "You're always welcome with us. Besides, you could use some muscle on those bones." He leaned over and gave David a playful punch on the arm. "Ya know, if you want." He looked into David's eyes and smiled, causing David's heart to skip a beat. Was he imagining things or was there something there?
