Your curiosity defeats your better judgment, and you proceed further inside the abandoned building to see who's inside.
"Hello?" you call out into the darkness. "Is there somebody there?"
The scraping noise suddenly stops, the mysterious stranger obviously startled by your voice. The scraping is soon replaced by footsteps on the wooden floor, starting out soft but becoming closer by the second. Your stomach feels like it's on fire from the tension as you hear the stranger approaching you. You are filled with fear now, but it is far too late to run as you see the silhouette of a man walking toward you from the back of the room.
"Oh dear, a visitor," he says in a low voice. "This won't do at all, no not at all..."
"I'm sorry, sir," you explain. "You see, I saw a sign in the window, and I thought--"
"Ah yes, the sign," the man cuts you off in mid-sentence. "Well, I do need a few... oh how should I put this delicately..." He searches for the right words for a few seconds before uttering, "I guess you could say I need test subjects."
"Test subjects?" you repeat back to him, a bad feeling settling in the pit of your stomach.
"Oh yes, my dear. I, Dr. Labinnac, am running a few... controversial experiments for the government regarding their new population control laws. Considering the nature of the work, though, funding is limited, and test subjects even more so."
You are starting to wish you had left when you had the chance. "I... I see..." you reply nervously.
"Since you now know too much about this, young lady, I don't think I can let you leave just yet. Therefore, you have two choices. You can come with me and assist me with my experiments, and I might just reward you for your compliance. Or, you can become one of my willing test subjects, which also has its... perks."
"And if I refuse to do either?"
The man takes a step toward you in the darkness. "I don't think you want to know the answer to that..."
