Chapter #6

Ruminations and Discovery

Alex looked up at Hunter and then down at you, biting his lower lip slightly. It seemed like he was thinking hard about his decision. Hunter had a knowing smirk on his face, as though there was no possible way Alex wouldn't immediately do as he said. You had nothing but ill feelings toward this massive kid. He weren't even sure who he was! You'd certainly never seen him before. Alex seemed to be on familiar terms with him so it was a safe bet that they were friends. There was still too many questions though. Why did this kid think that this was his room in his house? It was clearly yours and Alex's! The pictures on the fridge, the layout, and all the items in the house being in their proper place confirmed that. That was all without factoring in the size of the house, Hunter's size, and the strange key that seemed to be the cause of all this. Just what was this place? Were you dreaming? You pinched yourself on the arm to test it, a sharp pain indicating that, no, this wasn't a dream. Or at least not your dream.

Suddenly, you recalled a scene from Alice Through the Looking Glass. She was having a conversation with Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee when she noticed a terribly loud sound. It was from the Red King who was sleeping nearby. The Tweedle's both put forth the idea that the entire world, including Alice, was a dream and that if the Red King should ever wake up she would cease to exist. At the end of the story, Alice herself wakes up and wonders what that would mean for all the people and things she had met during her adventure. Did they cease to exist? Or did they never exist in the first place? Did they only exist long enough to provide Alice with her dream? It was a question that had always caught your attention, even after the rest of the story faded to obscurity (there was a unicorn and a goat or...something, you could never remember. Books weren't your thing anyway). What if that was what was happening right now? Was Alex or even Hunter dreaming and this entire house and everyone in it nothing more than a fabrication? Dream logic would go a long way to explaining the oddities here...you shook your head and pushed away these thoughts. No way! You were not just some fantasy cooked up by some dumb kid! That key was your only hope of escape and you weren't about to let it pass you by! You ran over to where the key was and reached your hand out for it...just as Alex snatched it up in his own hand!

"Alright! I'll join y-y-YEOUCH!" He yelled, the electric shock making him flinch, dropping the key...right on your head! The key was surprisingly dense for such an average looking thing, causing you to see stars. You stumbled a bit, looking up at Alex in a daze. He was frowning at his hand, flexing his fingers as the last of the pain from the shock left him...before starting to grow! You could only watch helplessly as your formerly little brother began to stretch up, taller and wider, his already torn shorts ripping apart entirely, leaving him only in a pair of tight boxer briefs which looked like they wouldn't be surviving much longer. His shirt, which had already grown too small for him, barely covering his chest, quickly ripped apart as well, his shoulders and arms too much for the sleeves to handle while a long tear ran down the center of it, the scraps falling to the floor around you. Suddenly, his head bumped against the ceiling eliciting a little yelp from Alex. "Wow...." he said, looking around in amazement. "Everything looks so...small!"

Hunter laughed and shoved his foot against your back, sending you falling face down to the floor. "Especially this little guy!"

Alex laughed and crouched down, roughly grabbing the back of your shirt and forcing you back on your feet. "Hey there little brother! How do you like being the small one huh?" He poked you rather hard in the chest, forcing you to step back. "Not so tough now are you? Now you can't boss me around anymore and be mean!"

"Come on Alex! I was just messing around! It's what brothers do right? Have some fun?" You knew perfectly well that nothing you ever did with him had been "fun", at least not in his eyes. But you were hoping he would have mercy on you. His smile just widened at your words.

"Yeah, that's true! And now it's MY turn to have fun with YOU!" His smile was a full blown grin at this point. You gulped and decided to throw caution to the winds. You turned on your heels, snatched the key and made a run for the door!

You had barely taken five steps before Hunter grabbed you by the back of your shirt and hoisted you into the air, his other arm snaking around your chest and pulling you close against his body. "Oh no you don't! You're not getting away THAT easily!"

You desperately tried to struggle, the key heating up in your hand. Unfortunately for you, Hunter's grip was too strong. He may have only been a little kid, but at his height and with his proportions he was far heavier and stronger than he had any right to be. You might as well have been a toddler in the arms of an adult! Suddenly, an electric shock coursed through your body, causing you to instinctively drop the key. Alex groaned and said, "Hunter! You let him use the key!"

Hunter merely grinned and said, "Don't worry about it! That key won't work for him! At least, not the way he thinks it will!"

You suddenly felt light headed. What did Hunter mean? Was his grip getting tighter? You looked down at his arm and were shocked to see it looked bigger! Was he growing again? You looked down to see if you were getting further away from the ground, but instead caught sight of your shoes, socks, and pants seemingly growing larger!

"That's so cool! He's getting smaller!" Alex said happily, moving in closer for a better look, his foot resting on top of the key. Alex yelped as the key shocked him yet again, his body expanding a few inches taller.

"Hey, careful!" Hunter said, picking up the key and sticking it back in the drawer. "We gotta be careful with that key!"

Alex gently pushed Hunter and said, "You're just jealous I'm taller now!"

Hunter pushed back and laughed. "Am not!"

"You totally are!"

"Yeah right, keep talking!"

As the two giant kids kept shoving each other you were caught in the middle, getting crushed between their bodies. You pushed desperately against your brother's bare torso with both hands and feet but he didn't even notice you! It didn't help that you were now several inches shorter than your normal height, your now too large clothes draping awkwardly on your body. This whole situation was getting worse by the minute!
