Erika entered 'The Japanese Hall' of the museum. It was decked out with endless parchments covering the various walls. They were interspersed with old black and white photos of Japan. Paintings being used to illustrate earlier periods in history.
She felt drawn to an ornate statue of a fox. Well, she assumed it was from the pointy ears, long bushy tail, and oddly smug expression cut into it's features. A plaque on the pedestal confirming her guess was right.
狐 Kitsune: Fox: Nine-tails. The embodiment of the trickster, a common character in many cultures. The more tails the higher the rank, with nine being the maximum. See also: Navaho Coyote; Norse Loki; Egyptian Seth. As creators of chaos, and spreaders of mischief.
Nodding to herself, she wished the Gods were that interesting nowadays. This statue apparently dated from the fourteenth century, and was previously taken from a shrine, as urban spread reached the site of the original temple and the ruins that were all that remained, and this statue in the wooden roadside shrine was the last remnant.
Looking around Erika saw she was alone, no guards to tell her not to touch the exhibit, she reached out. Patting the fox's head, scratching behind its stiff stone ears. She knew this act of rebellion would appeal to the spirit it was meant to represent.
