All of the plans that Tom had been making to cope with his weight gain went out the window over the next week. He never made it to the store to buy more forgiving jeans. Instead he started to rely on sweatpants and gym shorts rather than fighting to fasten the uncooperative button. He thought about making a stop at the gym every couple of days but he always ended up walking right past it, winding up on his usual stool at the diner.
The only thing getting a workout these days seemed to be his stomach. Between Eric's new job as a cook and his own enormous appetite, Tom was pretty sure he was eating more now than he had been at the beginning of the summer. Lunch usually consisted of several of the different dishes that Eric was working on, and he usually needed a couple hours planted on his stool to finish everything that was placed in front of him. By that time Eric was usually ending his shift, which was lucky for Tom since it meant he could hitch a ride in his friend's car instead of walking back.
Deep down, Tom realized that things were getting a little out of hand. Ironically, the only way he knew to stifle the concerns about his growing body was to drown them out with food. It wasn't going to make him any slimmer, but he couldn't help himself.
