Just as Maria started to recline, another explosion rocked the streets. This time, it was a car bomb that had exploded at her feet. Almost on cue, rocket granades. machine guns, and rifles opened fire from seemingly every rooftop downtown, and they all were aimed at one thing: Maria.
Maria tried to smash through some of the buildings, but the shots seemed to come from everywhere. And these shots were far more powerful, because they hurt this time, and even caused Maria to bleed in some areas on her body where the firing was concentrated.
Maria was in a panic. The rocket attacks jostled her about as she ran to and from the buildings. She could barely see through her blood. These fighters were better armed, that's for sure. They were also smarter, as they synchronized their attacks for maximum effect. Something was wrong. The puny folks of this city weren't supposed to be so well armed.
Were these military forces from outside the city that were trying to take her out? Or worse, were these forces sent by Alice to take this territory from her?
One thing was certain: she was going down if she didn't leave the city fast. So Maria ran as fast as she could out of the city and towards the plains to the south so that she could think on her next move. The sun was going down. Maybe by nightfall she could sneak back in and find out who was after her.
