Chapter #5

Snake with letters

    by: Gimlet Author IconMail Icon
The milk is dripping, so have to do this quick and... you struggle. Something feels... off, but you persevere, slowly, carefully, writing 'I' in the milk, then a space and... OK, it's hard to do this. Um thinking carefully, dripping leaving you little time to think, you manage 'A' and... OK, what's next?

"What?" Cameron says, staring at the window. It interrupts your train of thought and you struggle to get back, focusing on the window. Before the milk drips away you draw a 'J' in the milk. Wait, no, Jake should come later, after.... uh, what was it? 'I am Jake'... why is this so hard? But the milk has dripped away now. Dammnit!

"What's going on?" Ashley says, and you turn, your reptilian head facing her, she shudders a little, seeing you looking at her. But Cameron... she seems fascinated.

"What's going on is this snake just drew letters. Random perhaps, but he seemed very driven. Moreover usually a snake this... well, cornered, is rather more frantic. At very least they'll try to escape or try to crawl into a corner. Not move up to a window and write on it. Heck, snakes don't recognize that windows are a thing normally. They just try to go through them."

"So... smart snake?" Ashley says.

You toss your head, trying for a shake of the head, but... why is everything so strange? It feels off.

"Hmmm, I swear it's reacting to us speaking." Cameron says, focusing on you closely. "As in not just reacting to the noise, reacting to words."

You concentrate, trying to remember exactly how you used to nod. Struggling you focus, thinking exactly which way things went, then slowly, laboriously, you bob your head up and down.

"Fuck!" Ashley says, gaping at you.

Finally! They realize! You flop mostly to the floor, on top of the shattered bed, the stress of this getting to you.

"Uh, this... this is really weird." Cameron said. "OK, lets, uh, take five. Something strange is going on here. Wait. I have an idea."

She turns to Ashley.

"Don't get close, just in case, but he seems... well, we don't know it's friendly, but at least currently non-threatening. So, just... talk to him for a bit, stay away, but don't do anything. I'll be back in a few minutes." Cameron says, getting up and heading to the door. Ashley looks a little panicked.

"Wait, leaving me alone with this thing?"

"This 'thing' seems to be able to understand us to some degree. That's beyond pretty much most animals entirely. Bar the great apes, perhaps some parrots or Dolphins, depending on who you ask. This is big, and he doesn't seem to want to hurt you. Don't get close, just on principle, but you should be fine. I'll be back soon."

Cameron heads out, leaving a rather scared Ashley staring back at you. You lift your tail up and... sort of wave it at her. She stares back for several seconds before nervously waving her hand slowly at you. Now you have it in your head you manage to nod and she gulps in response.

Things are weird, and they don't know it's you yet, but it's good.
