First class, which was English, went as normal only you found subtle differences in how this world spelled certain words that had silent letters. One example was the word, 'comb', it was spelled 'com'. Another word, 'phone' was spelled 'fone', the silent letters had been dropped, spelling the words as they had sounded. "Interesting." you thought. "This is going to take some time to get used to."
"I see you are still using the old way of spelling, Eric." said Ms Rodgers. "I am aware that the federal changes in spelling has not yet reached everyone, please have your aunt check your homework before handing it in tomorrow."
"Yes, ma'am." you said, blushing.
Giggling rose from the class but Ms Rodgers called for silence. "Do not pick on Eric for his lack of knowledge." she scolded firmly. "We all learn at our own pace."
Feeling you needed to defend yourself, you spoke up. "Actually, I come from an... err... isolated part of the country." you explained. "I was home schooled before coming here to visit relatives."
Ms Rodgers smiled. "Well, that explains a lot." she said. "May I ask which town you lived in?"
You smiled and replied, "Suburbia."
"That must be a very small community." said Ms Rodgers. "I have never heard of such a place."
She shrugged then continued on with her teaching. When the bell rang, ending the first class, you walked out of the room and headed for your assigned locker. Fortunately, it was the same locker you had in your old world and the combination was the same. "At lest my old locker is the same." you thought. "Right down to the loose panel in the back."
You got your books for the next class and closed your locker. Only, as you turned around, you saw Jessie being roughly pushed into a locker by a much more muscular kid who seemed to have been the school bully. "I need an answer now, you little twerp!" he yelled. "Is it a yes or no!?"
You were angry that a boy would pick on your first friend in this world, you stepped up behind him as he then pushed Jessie against the lockers again. "Answer me, you little toad!" he screamed, turning red. "Do I have to get rough!?"
Having heard enough, you took the boy by the back of his shirt and easily lifted him off the ground. The boy struggled as Jessie rose a hand to his mouth, looking fearful. The bully seemed even more frightened as you turned him to to look in his eyes. "Do you have a problem with my friend?" you asked, angrily. "I certainly hope not..."
With your focus on the bully, you did not hear the whispered comments rising all around you as your move seemed to have gathered a crowd. Only Erica came along and saw what was happening. She gasped, sizing up the situation, she ran up to you and firmly called your name.
"Erica, this guys was..." you tried to explain.
"Put him down!" interrupted Erica in a strict tone. "Do it now!"
Reluctantly, you gentle placed the boy back onto his feet. As you expected, he began to quickly back away only Erica caught his arm. "My cousin mistook your actions as hostile, Hank." she said to the boy. "Where he comes from, they do not have the lover's quarrel ceremony."
You were stunned to hear that. "Lover's quarrel ceremony?" you asked, confusion obvious in your expression. "What!?!"
The hall exploded into laughter as you saw every girl blushing brightly and began to blush yourself. "Will some one please explain this to me?" you demanded.
"Around here, all love is accepted." explained Erica with a giggle. "Boy and girl, boy and boy and girl and girl. What Jessie and Hank were doing is called the lover's quarrel ceremony where a boy manly confesses his love to another boy and demands his response."
"I love this guy." said Hank, smiling. "I will scream it on the roof tops, if he will accept my affections..."
Smiling, Jessie charged Hank and shoved him into the lockers, as he had to him. "I love you too, you big ape!" he yelled. "Do you have a problem with going out with me!?"
The two embraced and kissed in the hall, causing the students to cheer as you continued to blush. "Okay.." you thought, nervous. "Some things are definitely different in this world..."
You began to wonder what other surprises were in store for you as you then headed for your next class...
