"Dragon fruit!"
"Dragon fruit!"
"Dragon fruit!
It was the only thing Dimitri could think of as he raced down the pathway. Ash was only a few feet behind him, though he struggled keep up with his friend's pace, who seemed be ready to break the sound barrier as he ran.
"Slow down!" the maroon dragon called.
"No way!" shouted Dimitri back, "You speed up! Those fruit are selling fast, and if I'm not there in time they'll have nothing left. Again."
There was only two things in the world that could get Dimitri this excited: one was a major ariel tournament, the other was the arrival The Cart, as the other students liked to call it.
The Cart was actually a portable shop that brought exotic foods from all around the lands, such as sweet meats, candies, and strange fruit that, to Ash, seemed to have come from a different planet.
One of those strange fruit were dragon fruit, something Dimitri was wild about. It was one of those few times that the black dragon tossed away his pride temporary to get that tasty treat, for the majority of dragons who bought at The Cart was mostly very young.
Older dragons saw it as silly and childish and only went if their siblings nagged at them enough. As expected, the area outside the school yard was packed with hatchlings, all waiting to place there orders.
Here and there were older dragons, most likely brothers or sisters that were accompanying their younger siblings.
"Dammit!" Dimitri cursed, stamping his foot on the ground when he saw the long line, "It's going to take forever to get to the front."
But what could he do? Dimitri had to wait patently for his turn, growing more anxious each minute. After fifteen minutes he arrived at the front, but was met with a big disappointment.
"Sorry, all sold out," the mole said.
Dimitri felt his heart sink into his stomach. "Come on," he whined, "There has to some left."
But the mole only shook his head. "Nothing."
The black dragon stomped away. He was furious. This had to be the third time this month that he was denied his treat. He just wanted one piece of dragon fruit. Was that too much to ask?
As Dimitri, feeling very defeated, headed to the benches in front of the school, one of which Ash was sitting on, he spotted a chubby, green hatchling who was munching on the very fruit he was so desperate to obtain.
From the several other half eaten fruit, it was obvious that he had bought and eaten a lot of them. So, Dimitri thought, "Why should that fatty have anymore? He had eaten enough."
The black dragon walked up the the hatchling and, as he was rising his paw to take a bite out of a fresh piece of dragon fruit, Dimitri snatched it away.
"Hey!" the young dragon cried in surprised, "That's mine!"
"And now it's mine," Dimitri sneered, sticking out his pointy tongue at him.
The hatchling burst out in tears and ran away.
"Really?" said Ash, frowning angrily at him, who had watched the whole scene, "Taking candy from a kid? Dick move."
"What?" said Dimitri, his mouth half full, "That brat had enough to eat."
The black dragon wanted to take another bite, and the maroon dragon wanted to argue further, but then something happened that took both of them by surprise.
Ash saw a dark green blur, and Dimitri felt the air knocked out of his lungs as something crashed into him. The piece of dragon fruit flew out of his paw. The black dragon rolled across the ground, coming to a halt when he bumped into a wall.
"So, you think you can pick on my brother, you big jerk!'
Dazed, Dimitri stood up and looked at the being that had assaulted him. It was a muscular, dark green dragon, who was a head taller that the black dragon. Behind him stood the same green hatchling Dimitri had stolen from.
His anger beginning to boil, he growled and said, "Yeah, I did. You fatass of a brother had enough to eat, you stupid brute."
"How dare you!" the dark green dragon roared and charged at Dimitri like a steam train.
But the black dragon easily avoided him, years of ariel practice kicking in.
"Stands still!" the green dragon shouted, trying to ram Dimitri with his horns but missing every time.
"What's the matter, chunky, can't catch me? Too fat?" the black dragon tainted.
It only served to make the bigger dragon even more mad, and he charged at him faster and with more fury. Now Dimitri only barely avoided his attacks. He knew that he won't be able to go on like this for long.
Then he had an idea. Jumping before the wall again that he had struck only a few moments ago, Dimitri stuck out his tongue.
"You know what, from now on I'll take food every time from your brother," he tainted.
This sent the dark green dragon over the edge. With a roar he charged at Dimitri with such fury that he could have killed the black dragon if he didn't jump out of the way at the last moment.
The bigger dragon struck the wall, sending a shockwave through the school so powerful that it felt like, to the people inside, that it was hit by a tremor, leaving a large crack in the wall.
Stumbling around, the dark green dragon clutched his throbbing head. It was now Dimitri chance to fight back. He charged at him, knocked him over, and pinned him down, holding him in a powerful headlock that threatened to choke the bigger dragon.
"For hell's sack, man, stop it!" shouted Ash.
"No!" Dimitri shouted back, "I'm not letting go until he says he sorry for challenging me."
"Let go, Dimitri, before..."
But Ash couldn't finish his sentence, for they heard the voice they dreaded the most.
"Stop this immediately!" Terrador's voice boomed over the yard.
Dragons, who had been watching the fight and pushing it on by chanting the word "fight" over and over, began to run away in fear of punishment.
"Let's get out of here," Ash called over the noise, trying to pull him off of the dark green dragon.
But Dimitri didn't move. He remained motionless, staring with wide eyes full of fear. He would have moved if it was only Terrador coming down those steps, but it wasn't. It was Terrador AND his father. The purple dragon didn't look happy.
